How to Save Money at Durango Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my moms pet in to be euthanized due to a spinal injury that they could not afford to be treated. The amazing doctors and nurses did not feel comfortable putting her down due to her age and her having a chance to have a good life. They found her a home writhing hours. I can express how thankful I am . They are truly a blessing and I hope they continue to do amazing things going forward.

My family has taken our pets here since I was a child (30+ years). Sadly, I can not recommend them at all, and I have found a new veterinarians office to see. My dog tried to eat a Bee (as dogs do), and seeing as she needed vaccines, I thought I would have them pull the stinger out and give her the vaccines she needed.. which hasn't ever been an issue before (she likes to eat bees, I do my best to stop her). This office has given her vaccines the same day as a bee stinger incident in the past.. she's four years old. Their wasn't a doctor on staff until 9 a.m. which I sat and waited for over an hour, starting around 8 a.m., not knowing their was no veterinarian on premise. When I finally saw the doctor, they wanted to surgically cut into my dogs lip to remove the bee stinger (which I removed no issue by massaging it out with my gloved hands after leaving their office) my dog was happy after being given a treat and some playtime! (pictured) Upon declining to let them sedate and give my dog this surgical procedure (they refused to remove it any other way) I asked if she could have her vaccines, to which I was denied due to the bee stinger they were refusing to remove without this surgery. Then they charged me for an office visit (they are walk-in only now) which would've had no fee had they given her the vaccines that they refused to give after trying to strong arm me into letting them give my dog surgery. I'd give this a zero if I could, which is so sad to say. They used to be a great veterinarian office.

I’ve been bringing my dogs here for about 10 years. I know that my guys are taken care of and are in good and caring hands. Staff is very knowledgeable and informative.

We have been bringing our pets here for 15 years. You can get appointments but we do walk-ins. From home I call to get on the walk in list. They send you a text link that shows where you are on the list and it’s updated constantly. When you’re 3-4 from the top you get a text to head over. We often will head over and wait in the lobby because if you get there before the “other person” that is heading over you might get called first. My favorite doctor is Dr. Vine and we always ask for him. Baby (our dog) more importantly liked him. All the doctors there are good and I have no compliant on any of them. The entire staff is great and the front desk remembered her name. They are also one of the few Vets that give Senior Discount. So ask for the discount. My husband just asked, is it a Sr Discount based on human age or pet’s age. I dont know. Ask!

The international health certificate process through them is horrible! For starters when I brought my dog in, they had paperwork and checklists for the wrong country... Should have been my sign to run, but I let them do the health certificate, and submit due to the tight timeline. It got denied because of gaps in information, even after we had conversations about making sure everything was in line and ready. When I tried to get in contact with the vet, I was put on hold for HOURS, and told multiple times I would receive a call back by a certain time, and it never happened. I had to initiate follow up every time, even after being told I'd be called back. Anyone going through the health certificate process understands the importance of time as everything has to be on a specific timeline, and if you miss one thing, then you have to repeat others, so when I couldn't contact the vet for days it pushed back the entire process, and resulted in over a month long delay (again, people going through this process understand how expensive delays like this are. Ended up costing me thousands to change her flight, had to have her boarded, and multiple more vet visits to fill gaps. The lack of ability to do the health certificate was annoying enough, but the lack of responsiveness is what blew my mind. I've been to 10+ vets in America and never had an experience so unbelievably bad. Thankfully, I was able to find a vet to rectify the situation, and my dog has now already travelled, but I would caution everyone going through this process to LOOK ELSEWHERE.
