How to Save Money at Blue Cross Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Thank you Dr. England and his team of lovely staff for taking such great care of my Pookie! ❤️ She is my baby and it is so unbelievably hard to find an exotic vet in town, ESPECIALLY during an exotic pet emergency! It’s a blessing Dr. England was able to squeeze her in. I was up all night worried to death that she had an infection. Which turned out to be not as bad as I thought. He was kind and sweet but also very professional and prescribed exactly what my baby needed. Not only Dr. England but his assistants were wonderful too. I can’t describe how refreshing it actually was to go to a veterinary clinic that has extensive knowledge on rodents/exotic animals! I have been to two different clinics in the past for exotic animals, and Blue Cross hands down is my #1 choice after today. I feel comfortable here and will certainly be bringing my babies back here next time. Bless you guys and everything you do! -Pookie, R. Pig and Mum! ❤️

I took my dog Ivy in today and they got to me quick. Explained everything I needed and what to do and I was only there for a max of 15 min. Great place treat the animals like they are there very own animals. I appreciate the love and care all the employees have for these animals. They wake up and look forward to there jobs and you can tell they love there jobs. I called plenty of other places but all of them had the earliest appointments at the end of September and I needed one ASAP so Blue Cross vet was able to get me in the last min.

The only place I’ll take my beloved pup. Easy to get an appointment and competent vets/vet techs who are very patient and take their time to work with your pup if they become anxious around shots or blood draws.

My dog has masticatory myositis which affects her jaw. She has been seeing Dr. Markins for acupuncture appointments and I’ve seen so much improvement in Roxy’s jaw function, as well as so many other things. She feels great! She used to be very nervous and on edge at the vets office but now she enjoys going in for her ‘feel good pokes’ and to get some good treats from the Dr. and the tecs. :)

I had been going to VCA for 30 years. Knowing my vet would retire someday I found Dr Hamill to take care of my new puppy and an older terrier that couldn't get testing done. Dr Hamell was amazing so when she went to Blue Cross I followed her but still went to my old vet as well. I am astounded by the individual care and customer service at Blue Cross. And compared to VCA, the prices are a little lower. I have now left my vet of 30 years and will remain with Blue Cross. I would have hit 5⭐️s but I'm still new to this practice. I have no doubt that I will revise this review in the future to all 5 ⭐️s. So glad I found you! Gratuitous dog pictures for attention!
