How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First time going to this place and it was one of the most welcoming, professional, and nicest staff that had helped me with my emergency. I would recommend them to friends and family! It was fast and they updated me with every knowledge of my dog and what I needed to know. The doctors and nurses are all professional and did and excellent job. All, but positive and good things to say about this place and especially the people who works there. Amazing!!!!!!! I appreciate everything that they do for us and our pets. Amber, an overall delight ! Tommy and I gives thanks for all the care and kindness from all the staffs!!!!

Outstanding service by this much needed Veterinary Emergency Group. Although my beloved pet passed away, the efforts this team made to save her did not go unnoticed by my son, who was present. Everyone was so respectful, courteous, and attentive, that he cannot stop talking to his friends about the outstanding service provided by VEG of Union, NJ. Thank you all for your work that night, and the lovely cards you sent us, shortly after. Aside from all the handwritten condolences, sending us a paw print of our beloved dog, touched our hearts, in a way, that I simply cannot express. God bless these veterinary PROFESSIONALS!

Not going to lie, every visit here for us has been super hard. It’s always on a bad day, weekend, holiday or midnight. But the staff has always been welcoming to us. They have always treated us with kindness and respect. They have always treated our dogs with kindness and respect. Recently we had to bring our dog in due to many medical reasons. The staff and vets were all sympathetic and caring. Gave us our options and gave us time to think. Unfortunately we had to have our dog put to sleep. The staff handled us carefully and with love. They got us set up and we got to spend time with our Rusty before he had to go. We had our own private quiet room. Though it was sad we felt cared for. The staff then proceeded to mail us a card and it made my day. Rest in peace Rusty. Thank you all.

This is such a great veterinary practice! Call ahead before arriving so they are aware of what is needed for your pet’s care. Upon arrival my pet received love and care. Everyone was so nice to her! Not only that, they are stocked with snacks and drinks for the pet parents. I’ve been to other emergency veterinarians and there were no snacks/drinks to be found, which can be hard on a pet parent during a visit.

A few weeks ago, my world was turned upside down when my seemingly perfectly healthy senior sheltie had a sudden series massive grand mal cluster seizures in a short time span. Our vet was closed by the time I could drive him safely to be seen. I called VEG and rushed him over as soon as we had a break from seizing. The subsequent hours and days were some of the hardest and worst of my life. The staff at VEG was ready to take him immediately upon our arrival. Within minutes, he was being treated, blood work taken, and the reality of the situation was communicated with me by a kind vet tech (I forgot the names of the staff that night. It was a blur and a traumatic time. My apologies) We had 2 choices.. to try our best attempt at bringing him back, or to let him go. My dog has been my rock and my everything for the past 13 years. I’d have traded my life for his if it were an option. Of course, observation and all the possible treatments were going to be costly, but I’d have mortgaged my house or sold a kidney to save my dog. Staff at VEG made my dog comfortable and cared for him overnight to the best of their abilities. By early morning, it was clear that the damage was done. It was very early in the morning, my husband and very young kids were sleeping, and I couldn’t wake them to come say goodbye. I couldn’t stomach the thought of putting my dog down by myself. On the drive over, I decided the best thing I could think of was to bring him home so my family would get the chance to say goodbye, and take him to our vet at home. I wasn’t sure if this would be allowed, but when I got in, the staff was empathetic and immediately got to it getting him comfortably medicated to go home with me. This gift of time was the only small silver lining in this whole horrible situation. I cannot thank the staff at VEG enough for being understanding and compassionate, not pushy during a very sensitive time. I took him home and we had a really beautiful, peaceful day. My parents were able to come say goodbye, my children had the opportunity to brush his hair, read him stories, his fur sister got to spend the day at his side, and most importantly, I had the chance to spend most of the day holding my first baby, talking to him, thanking him, brushing his beautiful hair, listening to music. He was comfortable and content. By the time we got to his vet later in the day, he had faded and we knew the time was right. We thank the staff at VEG for their part in the vital care we needed for our boy in the last days of his life, for your kindness and empathy, and encourage those facing difficult decisions in the end to do what you feel is right, even if it means an odd request like taking your animal home for a while. It really changed things for us and helped soften the blow, even if just a little bit. In loving memory of Sheldon 🌈🐾🤍
