How to Save Money at VCA Rutherford Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
Today was the first and last time I'll be taking my paw son there. A dog peed in the waiting area, a tech wiped it up but didn't actually clean the floor. Gross. In the exam room a dirty towel was placed on the table which i wasn't comfortable putting my cat on (fleas etc.) The doctor/vet seemed knowledgeable and provided treatment. I'll be curious to see if it clears up his allergy. My jaw hit the floor when I got the bill... $307 for a non-emergency visit. Utterly absurd!!! They don't make it easy. Furthermore the two individuals at the front desk were not friendly. Overall not a good experience at VCA Rutherford Animal hospital...

Wasn’t going to leave a review but after some thought I feel it’s important. Second time at Rutherford giving them another chance with different management and a new dog, and this was my 3rd or 4th visit with no problems until now. I felt like everything was a money grab ($500+ for a blood panel, on top of the visit and vaccine fee).. I’ve paid a lot for annual vet visits but never that much to take blood, too. Questions I asked were looked over. My dog was horrified after this visit since they cut and traumatized his duclaw and because of this, he went #2 when it happened. Then a tech walked my dog out, who said she wasn’t there when it occurred, and told me the dog may have blood on him. I asked why, and was told from his vaccine. Looked down at the nail and it was bleeding. Yet the dr couldn’t come speak with me because she was with another patient... Will not be back. Ever.

Staff is nice and good and all but these prices are getting out of control. Had to switch Vets and found one with reasonably solid prices. For instances VCA wanted to charge me 1300-1400 for a neuter and the other place was $800 with extra sedatives when my dog gets home.

I decided to go here when I had to put my sweet girl to sleep this weekend because it was closer to us then our regular vet and I didn’t want to stress my cat anymore then she already was. Anyone who has had to put a pet to sleep knows how unbelievably heart wrenching this is. Dr. Hosin and the vet tech (sorry I didn’t catch her name) were so incredibly kind, patient, and went above and beyond for us. They treated us and our baby Squeak like they had known us for years, and the entire process was handled with such grace. I’ve been a cat owner for over 15 years and I’ve been to my fair share of horrible vet clinics with no bedside manner whatsoever. Rutherford VCA is not a place where you have to worry about your pets being in great care. I can’t thank Dr. Hosin and her staff enough for their knowledge, comforting words, and for making my sweet girl feel so comfortable in her time of need. Highly recommended, and I look forward to bringing my other pets here in the future. Thank you again.

I’ve been taking my dog here for several years. Staff is very friendly. I brought my dog for a checkup visit today that included a Bordetella vaccine and heartwarm/tick disease test. We did the same exact visit one year ago on 11/8/22 and the cost has increased by 38%! Last year the total was $265 and this year it was $365. That’s quite a big jump in one year. Here’s the breakdown from 2022 to 2023: Exam: 107.50 to 129.00 — 20% increase Bordetella: 41.80 to 61.20 — 48% increase HW/Tick Test: 129.95 to 216.00 — 66% increase I understand businesses are also impacted by inflation, but these increases are out of line. Is it really necessary to fleece pet owners like this? Seems excessive and greedy. I feel bad for people that have more than one animal. Costs are going to really add up. What a shame.
