How to Save Money at Rockaway Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I love Rockaway Animal Hospital. My cat got sick the day before we were going on vacation out of the country. My Vet at the time was closed weekends and I was in a panic. My sister said to go to her vet, they were there 24/7 so I called. They took my girl (Black and White one) in and kept her while I was away. She is much better and back to her normal self. Buddy (Orange one) has also gotten great care there too. Thanks you to all of the great staff there. You can feel they are loved and well cared for. And the visiting hours are a plus too.

I don’t even know where to begin regarding the standard of care I have received over the past year with this animal hospital. And I am not the only one just filter all the negative reviews and see how many of them has been recent. It is disappointing because I discovered the practice eight years ago when it was Dr. Mainer and his wife they were incredibly professional and thorough and caring, and I was so pleased that I had found the best veterinarian practice. My dog has since passed away, but my daughter brings her cat to this vet practice, and unfortunately, it is gotten so big and crowded that the wait times are atrocious even with an appointment, and the standard of care that we have received for several different bigger issues has been absolutely unbelievable to me. My daughters cat had pneumonia and had to stay for a fee days, and we were kept in the dark about her condition. We were handed off to vet techs who did not know her case, misinformed us several times, could not provide us with information about updates, and it was impossible to get a vet to even call us back on her condition which at the time, according to them, was precarious. The cat also got a small wound on her back recently that we brought her in for a witch needed a few minor stitches, and they forced us to leave her there overnight because “no one was there to attend her to stitch her up” and we were hit with a costly bill of overnight care even though she received none overnight at all, and was stitched up in the afternoon the next day, so the cat was put under unnecessary stress , and had no one attending her for a completely unnecessary overnight stay. Again this was the second time with a medical issue where she was there and they would not call us back with status updates even though we called multiple times for answers. It was very hard to get information from them and no vets responded to us, and only again vet technicians, who not knew nothing about her case or her condition. Thankfully I do not live in the Rockaway area anymore and if I did, I would never bring any of my animals there. My daughter is now switching vets because we are completely dissatisfied with the substandard level of care that has been given to us on numerous occasions. I am very sad because I thought I found a great practice. I will never go back here again, and I do not recommend it to anyone who cares about their pets and their health.

Dr. Maniar is one of the best animal doctors in the Morris County area!!! He took care of my Toby for 14 years and, I had to say goodbye for the 1st time to a furry individual in February 6, 2023. That experience changed my life completely and for ever. Not only I'll give Dr. Maniar a 5 star review, but I will share how compassionate, available, and caring human he is, that even when he's trying to enjoy his personal time with his loved ones, he is always a call away. Toby was my first dog ever, and probably many of you will think I haven't experience as many other animal services....yes I have, I had the blessing of having a caring friend who saw my heart broken in million pieces after my Toby's spirit was set free. She drove 10 hours and got me a new puppy her name is Mia! She's now only 2 months old and as you know when they're babies they are super energized, she had an accident at only 8 weeks old and I've been at the Sussex County Animal Hospital 7 times; 1st visit $250 and $358 2nd visit because of an accident $941 3rd visit follow up change of Stent $167 4th visit follow up not ready to remove Stent another $161 - only changed bandage. 5th time- follow up not ready to remove stent yet- $161- changed bandage 6th visit- vaccine and wellness check up follow up $250 balance of the puppy wellness plan, and $485 7th visit another accident same leg, waited 2 hours not seen, because another dog with critical condition arrived after us.....we left, the next day called her primary doctor, not doctor is available.... but wait at the ER they can do an x-ray for $500. I'm disgusted how everything is money for some, Dr. Maniar has always been understanding, flexible and that's why he is successful! I wish him and his staff many more sucess and blessings! Unfortunately, we can't have a couple of him (clones) to help him run his office. 😀 My friend has been taking care of my new furry friend until I'm approved to bring her home with us. A new hospital was tried.....not a great experience but their advertisements sound great!!! Watch out!!!!

My mother took her cat here for a UTI which they said turned into a kidney infection and kept her for a week plus a follow up. I questioned the week stay but my mother assured me that the doctor was great and super caring. Further speaking to other vets I was told that cats can go home with kidney infections as long as they are eating and drinking, which my cat was. This is known to be a common scam by centers, keeping pets overnight when it’s not needed medically. They claimed to be giving my mom a deal of $1700 for a week stay plus $400 for a follow up visit. This cat didn’t need 24/7 hour care. Yes the vet is nice etc. however when you’re taking advantage of people who don’t know the protocol.. this is malpractice. My parents had to charge a credit card as they are on a fixed income and cannot afford this. Shame on you.

Amazing staff! Unfortunately our little guy was admitted for 3 weeks, they allowed visits every day at late and off hours. The doctor provided nearly daily updates and is very knowledgeable. We are so lucky to have this practice in Rockaway!
