How to Save Money at Princeton Animal Hospital & Carnegie Cat Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We bring out zoo (4 cats and 2 dogs) to Princeton animal hospital and have for the last year now. I don’t even know where to begin because we feel so lucky to have found a practice like this. To start, we have a very anxious, touch sensitive puppy who is not the easiest at the vet. Every vet we’ve seen is so accommodating and takes their time to make our pup feel as comfortable as possible - even offering happy visits where she can come in and just get treats and love. Second, we love that they have a separate entrance specifically for cats and make sure that the experience is as stress free as possible for them. Lastly, and maybe one of the biggest things, we got a shepherd mix in October, 4 days in we felt like something was wrong and took him in for his first visit. Immediately, they felt a mass and scheduled an emergency surgery the next morning. Because of how quickly this was found and how well they took care of our boy, we’re on month 6 post cancer diagnosis. Every member of the staff has treated us so well and loved on all of our animals. They truly care so much about them, take their time with each visit and always make sure to follow up and check in. Cannot recommend them enough!

This community is so lucky to have such a caring animal hospital and clinic nearby! I have been a longtime customer of the Princeton Animal Hospital and they've been so good to me and my cat Hope. They take the extra time to be personable and explain the visits and any procedures, the doctors and techs are communicative over the phone, and I've always got the sense that they really cared about your experience with them. As a longtime boarder and customer as well, I feel like I leave Hope in expert hands while I'm traveling and they send pics and take my frequent phone calls to check up on her! They are the best and thanks for taking care of me and my best furry friend so well. It makes all the difference!

I recently visited Princeton Animal Hospital with my dog ,and I couldn't be happier with the care we received. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and they made sure my pet felt comfortable throughout the visit. The vet took the time to thoroughly explain everything and answered all my questions with compassion. They even adjusted the entry and exit procedures for my dog selective pup. I highly recommend Princeton Animal Hospital to anyone looking for top-notch veterinary care!

We have three cats and have been going to Princeton Animal Hospital since 2020. We have been happy with their services, veterinarians and other staff members. Although they’re more expensive than the previous vet we used, we have appreciated the care they have provided. Well, that changed tonight and we aren’t sure that we will continue to bring our cats here. In summer 2021, they determined that one of our cats had a bowel obstruction after doing multiple ultrasounds and X-rays. Having just dealt with losing two family members, we couldn’t handle losing our young cat and paid for the surgery. All in, we paid about $8000 for multiple office visits and the surgery. The procedure was successful and our cat has been great until today. Today, our cat was showing the same symptoms that he had in summer 2021. We called during their listed business hours to bring him in and were turned away. Although they said it sounded urgent, they couldn’t see him and recommended we take him to an emergency veterinary office. When we called the emergency office they said, “Oh, was your office closed and their answering machine told you to come here?” This struck a chord with us. After years of visits and THOUSANDS of dollars spent, our trusted veterinary office turned us away during their business hours when we needed them most. We are extremely disappointed, especially after waiting for over four hours at the emergency vets office and paying $1200 to see staff we don’t know or trust.

I started taking my dog here about 3 years ago when he was a 1 year pup. They’re a little pricey but I really like them for multiple reasons listed below in no particular order: - the doctors and nurses are just so great with my dog considering he’s very twitchy and particular about where he’s touched - the CSRs will actually come in the examination room for payment if there are too many dogs outside (my dog doesn’t like other dogs) - Every time my dog’s been diagnosed with something and given treatment, I always get a follow up call a few days later - Nothing is ever diagnosed on a hunch, everything is tested - They actually work with me to see how I could utilize more of my insurance (in my case I had my dogs schedule on bi annual visits and wanted to club it all together). They were very thorough in helping me understand what each test provides, etc. - Reminder texts for appointments really help me out as appointments are scheduled months in advance and slip my mind sometimes My dog has anxiety (a little better now) and I always feel nervous taking him in crowded or unfamiliar places, but Princeton Animal Hospital does such an amazing job with my dog that I feel very comfortable.
