How to Save Money at Metuchen Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Rogan, Hope, and the rest of the staff are kind, patient, and really helpful. We are new pet parents and they gave us plenty of time to ask questions.

I did a walk-in and the receptionist was amazing. She asked me come back 45 minutes later. My son just adopted this 11 month old Abyssinian and it was required a wellness exam. Coming back experience: technician was very good and gentle. Place was surprisingly clean. Doctor spent over 30 minutes which is unheard of. Answered every questions. Gave numerous suggestions. In general against medicines and processed foods. Which is good. Throughly checked the cat. Cat was surprisingly calm. Found ear mites which rescue center (later confirmed) had missed. On the spot applied medicines and taught me how to apply at home. For flea/tick/parasites gave good advice and gave us an aerosol to use at home rather than giving cat medicines. Very good experience. Their parking is a bit tricky. Narrow lane between 2 houses leads into the back for parking. LOL.

The staff and vets are great. I brought in 3 kittens and they had checked them out and given great advice. Also, they are not crazy expensive for office visits. Don't go to places like banfield. There you won't get the same vet twice almost always and they will try to sell you in to things you don't need. The staff at Metuchen Vet were straight forward and honest and didn't blow smoke up my you know what.

I recently brought in our cat, Romeo, for a skin issue. Dr Rogan was so gentle and caring that Romeo was unusually comfortable in the office. Dr Rogan explained his diagnosis and treatment plan very thoroughly and answered all my questions without rushing our visit. i cant say enough about him and the wonderful staff. Everyone is so friendly and caring. I was also very grateful that when I arrived at the office, I was not made to wait a long time but instead was almost immediately brought to an exam room. By far the best vet I've ever been to and definitly have confidence in

I brought my ferret, Missy, here with no idea what was going on with her. She was lethargic and withering away. I came to the Metuchen Vet Hospital not knowing what to expect. When I got there, the staff was immediately welcoming and kind. They were attentive and asked a bunch of questions about her condition. During the exam, I cannot tell you how sweet and gentle they were with her. She got spooked and had an accident and the assistant was so sweet and ran to grab something to clean it and her up. After some poking and prodding, the doctor gave my little one a diagnosis. He had to give her a shot there, and I was sent home with several meds. I came back 2 weeks later and she was a little better. She got another injection and the doctor told me she would get one more and be good with that. So, for another 2 weeks, we continued with the meds. When I tell you, in that second week, that she was almost back to her normal self...I was so relieved! I brought her back today for the final injection and they took me right away and saw the change in her. She got her last injection, and I was given instructions on continued care (as her disease is permanent, but manageable). I almost cried because I was so happy that she was doing better and that the vet (Dr. Boaz) was so spot on with her diagnosis and treatment. His support staff is wonderful too. Always so wonderfully friendly, kind, and accommodating. I can’t recommend them enough. I was so worried and scared for my baby and she did so well with them in the examinations and is doing so much better now. If you have a pet in need of medical attention, do yourself a favor and go to this clinic.
