How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
Let me start by saying this establishment has gone down hill since Covid, specifically the Watchung Location. They have not fully resume in person visit majority of appointment are drop off only, they dont answer theyre phone and doctors doesn't communicate with the pet parent in regards to your visit. The front desk employess are the one who tell you how the visit went not the actual doctor. To me that's very unprofessional. So I decided to switch location and we found Banfield in Metuchen. This location is fairly new and it not too far from me. My first 2 visit was very pleasant and pleasing. I was able to get an appt immediately for one of my BT Pepper. Not drop off actual in person visit. That's when I met Dr. Walker she was very professional, good listener, thorough and caring. At that moment I thought I found a new pet friendly Hassel free caring hospital for my 2 BT. About 3 weeks ago where I need an appt for 1 of my BT where I was told no appt available but drop off only I agreed because she needed to be seen as per the emegency doctor for follow up. For the 3rd time Dr. Walker came through for my baby girl. She then recommended another follow up. The follow appt I was given is another drop off. I now see a pattern of continously drop off appt. Today i made an appt to see my girls Primary Care Veterinarian since hus back from hus tripis I called Metuchen office early this morning authorizing them to release full July medical records and they failed to do so. When I got the the vet's office at 345 pm I was told that Banfield I Metchen hasn't forwarded to records to them, so I called my self and got the answering service then j was transferred spoke with Gianna asked if I can hold for 15 to 20 minutes and I agreed 35 minutes later still on hold called back from another line place on hold again by Gianna hang up called back again answering svs again at this point I'm frustrated, annoyed and angry. About 45 to 50 minutes of going back and forth they finally fax the medical records. It's very disappointing and embarrassing the way this establishment handle a very simple request. No urgency and very bad communication. I rather drive 45 minutes and pay Doctor visit fee knowing I feel valued and meeting my girls need with urgency. I hope Banfield management re-evaluate how they do business specifically customer satisfaction. Front desk employee needs coaching. These employees are the face of your business. You need to hire employee who like what they do and enjoy what there doing.

I had an appointment for one of my dogs today, she needed a vaccine and I decided to add a nail trim, which the technician said that was going to be a little more expensive than a groomer because they are hospital staff. My boyfriend and I decided to add it anyways because our dog is a 2-month-old Belgian Malinois with black nails; we were afraid to cut the pink area and hurt her so we decided to let “professionals” do it. While we were waiting in the room we heard our puppy crying in pain like three times, the first one we thought it was the vaccine, but the other two made us suspect that they might have cut the pink area. When the technician brought her back 4 of her nails were bleeding, we tried to talk to her, but she seemed so energetic that she barely let us talk. She said that they don’t have x-ray vision to cut black nails and that cutting the pink area was a risk (which she didn’t mention at first) she applied a yellow-ish powder on the dog nails and sent us to the front. We also tried to talk to Carly the receptionist to express and explain our unpleasant experience which left us very disappointed, but she didn’t care at all she said it was a risk and that they couldn’t do anything about it. She was smiling ironically while she was denying us any kind of help or customer service. If I would have been told that one of the risks implied my puppy being in unnecessary pain I would have take her to my groomer who can actually cut any kind of dog nails without hurting the dogs. Very unprofessional stafff.
