How to Save Money at NorthStar VETS

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff and doctor who took care of my sick puppy were very friendly, kind, and helpful. The facility was clean and comfortable and we were done in a relatively short amount of time, considering it is an emergency service that was open when most vet clinics were already closed for the weekend! My puppy is feeling much better this morning and I highly recommend NSV - MS.

I just want to thank all the doctors and staff for taking such great care of my cat Grimes. I had no idea how sick he was when we brought him to his regular vet. They immediately said he needed to go to an emergency hospital and may not survive. I know he unfortunately isn't going to live anywhere near as long as he should. But I'm thankful for every extra day I get to spend with him and I owe that to Northstar vets.

$25,000 and my dog passed 3 days later. When something goes wrong you will receive 0 communication & then they will recommend you go to another hospital for treatment since they do not have qualified doctors. It’s absolutely predatory and they do nor give realistic, honest expectations and recommendations. After numerous emails and phone calls to the director, staff and doctor the most I recieved was “I’m sorry for your loss”. Absolutely no accountability and all I get was “we can use her as a case study” I am absolutely no words. And yes you read that correct over 25 THOUSAND dollars. Adding: the lack of communication was 1st with the side effects. Information sheet regarding post-recovery was extremely vague. I was told there was less than a 1% chance there would be side effects. None were specified the severity or signs to look for. I called several times after treatment to get ahold of someone to clarify what I should be looking for and when to take her back to the vet. I got the run around multiple times and could not get in touch with a doctor. It wasn’t until I sent a very upset email fearing that my dog was suffering and that the treatment escalated her death that I finally got a phone call. When I spoke to the Director after her passing he informed he did not know why I was directed to speak to the person that I was told to ask for (leaving names out) and that he never received a copy of any of my emails. Essentially seems like staff was covering up the issues and did not alert management of what was going on. Obviously hindsight is 20/20. However I still absolutely cannot get over this an am heartbroken and severely financially in the hole from a treatment that realistically never should have been recommended. I was 100% preyed on and hope that others see this and steer away. I wasn’t even offered $1 compensation after my baby, myself and my children watched her suffer at the hands of said “treatment”. Her quality of life would have been better if nature had just taken its course. I was told 12-18 months. I was told she had “weeks” to get in and she needed to start treatment immediately. 3 days after treatment I had to say goodbye. She suffered for 3 days following the doctors “recommended treatment”. Her pictures were never posted. I guess you only share the ones that make it through or else it would be poor advertising. Feel free to email me to discuss since you have my contact information. I have email proof and bills to provide.

So scary when you have a pet emergency. The staff couldn’t have been more patient, kind and informative. We felt better leaving with our cat knowing they had looked into everything for him and sent us home with meds to help him get better. Russ thanks you for looking after him- but not thankful for sticking the thermometer up his butt LOL!
