How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Genuinely unsatisfied with the service my cat received here. Upon calling for an appointment, I told them that he had gotten out (he's strictly an indoor cat) and now has a runny eye and a pretty bad cough. Upon picking him up, (they only had drop-off appointments available) I was told that he had to be given gabapentin, which is odd since he didn't have any issues with his last appointment. They also failed to call me and ask me if use of this was okay and explain that it would come at an additional cost. They also diagnosed him with conjunctivitis. When I asked about his persistent sneezing, they claimed he didn't sneeze at all, which again was very odd since he constantly did it at home. Upon picking him up I inquired about signing up for the wellness plan to help with the cost and was told no, but I could sign-up at his check-up appointment the following week as if that makes a difference? Mostly likely just a money grab from this facility. My cat is now sneezing more than ever 2 days later because their vet did not properly diagnose him. Needless to say, I will not be returning to this location nor Bainfield Pet Hospital again.

I love Bandfield, most locations are very professional, caring and informative. But the Hamilton Office should be closed. They are useless! Twice in the last year and a half I needed an appointment for my dog for a medical problem. They never answered the phone and the never returned a call from a message left. Today I walked in to get a refill on a prescription that written by a my normal Bandfield veterinary who is 35 miles away. Hamilton told me they wouldn’t refill the prescription because the veterinarian didn’t feel comfortable because they didn’t write the prescription. I guess this veterinarian thinks to much of themself. So much for being in a network of veterinarians that can pull up files from another location. If I could give a lower rating for this location I would.

I want to express the terrible experience I had with this clinic and Dr. Raborn Who was apparently responsible for my cats care. I dropped off my 9 month old kitten at the clinic as she was having severe symptoms. She was lethargic, hiding, not eating and in overall distress. I made it clear to the staff she was unwell. Later, I received a call to inform me that she was in good health and they claimed her breathing was fine, her heart sounded good and they saw no concerns with her health. I insisted to run more tests and That I was sure she was not well considering i am around her at all times and she was very obviously not in good shape. I was charged $500 for the visit on top of having insurance through them, not even one hour after picking her up my cats condition worsened I had to rush her to the emergency animal hospital Where she was diagnosed with fluid in her lungs and a blood clot in her heart within 24 hours my cat passed away. She was only nine months old. I feel that Dr. Raborn is not a Dr. And couldn’t care less about our pets conditions. If you love your pet do not risk going here, it’s not worth losing your baby over.

I've been bringing my 13 year old cats here since I got them at 6 months old. Service has severely gone down hill over the past few years. I scheduled a sick appt for my girl as an in room visit. I was told it HAD to be a drop.off due to staffing issues. I was annoyed but wanted my baby to get looked at so I dropped her off. When I picked her up I was told she peed on herself but they cleaned her. Concerning bc she has never done that but ok. I asked of it was normal as they were trying to get a urine sample. The staff said that's a question for the dr but didn't offer to find the dr and ask for me. I pick up her carrier to leave and she REEKED. mind you I was bringing her there bc a possible uti but the only symptoms she had was peeing out of the box twice in the span of 5 days. No smell. No pain. No licking. Everything was normal but those 2 times. I got her home and she was SOAKED. I had to give her a bath and wash the carrier. I have never smelled something so bad in my life. I feel like I should have been alerted prior to picking her up but also I have no idea how long she was sitting in it. Also after not hearing any updates for 8 hours I had to call them and ask what was going on. I've been considering dropping the insurance and going to a new vet for months after they argued with me last year when I wanted a sick appt for the same cat bc I knew she had an ear infection. They questioned me about how I knew. She's my cat for 1. I know what's not normal and I was raised woth cats that had chronic ear infections. I know what they look like. but this put me.ovwr the edge. I hate dropping my pets off for an appt if it's not a surgery. I'll never put my cats through that again. I only gave 2 stars bc it is very possible she has a uti and if she peed on herself that is not the fault of the staff. Lack of communication is though. *update. I've bumped them down to 1 star. She does have a uti so I went to pick up her antibiotic. Brought it home to give her and it wasn't mixed! Now I have to drive back to gwt them to mix it. I live 25 min away and only kept going here bc I previously loved Dr. Snelling. Now that she's not there and with the terrible service I'll never go there again.
