How to Save Money at Foster Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Edit: I cannot continue to endorse this hospital. A few days into treatment, one of our two puppies had a terrible reaction and when I called the office, I was told they were down a vet that day and couldn't help me. I called my pet insurance and they gave me advice, then found me another vet. I wasn't even asking for anything but a moment of their attention. I can't think of a hospital or even a pharmacy that prescribes medication and then tells you "sorry you're having a reaction, go somewhere else, we're busy." It's unthinkable and, with humans, an actionable offense.

I'll preface this by saying that I've owned dogs for over 40 years, so I've had my share of veterinary experiences. I've been to Foster before for my previous dog. I was content with the service I received. I ended up using a different vet a lot further, who swayed me with their compassion and sincerity. I would continue to use them, but they are a 25-minute drive versus 5 minutes. However, I may be reconsidering that. Every other vet I've been to has a grace period for the given appointment time. Apparently, Foster does not, SO BE WARNED, be on time, or don't bother. Before you ask, we weren't egregiously late, we're literally talking, less than 10 minutes, and our reward was, "you have to come back another day."

We came here for a short while because my regular vet was unable to see my very sick dog. Foster took us right away and for the two weeks that my pup pulled through with us, they took amazing care. The vet texted me every day to see how she was doing and when it was time to say goodbye they dropped everything and took us right away. When we are ready to love another pup, there's nowhere else I will go for vet care. I cannot possibly say enough amazing things about this facility and the staff and doctors.

I had been taking my dogs here for years and even during covid times I had such great experiences. But this year has been the worst experiences with foster animal hospital and I always try to give the benefit of the doubt because I loved Dr Andrea when she was there and Dr Barrow is great but leaving a message will never help you even though they say they’ll call you back they never do. I got put on hold for ten + minutes and I thought they had forgotten about me so I called again tell me how during business hours suddenly the phone lines are off? Genuinely shocked that this happened because I had so much love and care for it but now it doesn’t even feel like the animals aren’t prioritized anymore. I used to call and they’d do everything in their power to get me an appointment some how now it’s like oh I’m sorry over a week wait to be seen. No longer my primary vet will be going elsewhere so sad about it but my pets health is a priority.
