How to Save Money at Animal & Bird Health Care Center & Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

i would give 10+ stars if i could. dr. cromwell and her team are some of the best vets you could find. i had to get my elderly rabbit a surgery and they took such good care of him. they took the time to explain in detail what had to be done and all of the aftercare to an extent i’ve never experienced. dr cromwell emailed back and forth with me, called me multiple times, and spoke to me in person twice about his surgery, as did all of the vet techs. he’s doing better then he did before surgery and has been the happiest he’s been in years. this team really cares about your furry family, i cannot stress that enough. one of the vet techs hugged me while i cried and helped me to compose myself. i would never recommend a vet with such passion like i do this vet. thank you to dr.cromwell and staff, you guys are amazing and i appreciate everything you’ve done for us 🖤

They always take such good care of my furkids. Dr Kupersmith stepped in when my vet wasn't available to us. I'm thankful for Animal and Bird you saved my furkids and gave me more time with before he passed away. Thank you all so much for the care and concern you showed during my grieving period.

I took my ferret (Oliver) there the other day, because my normal vet was booked. And let me tell you these people are AMAZING from the moment we walked through the door all the way up until we left. It was a positive experience and they genuinely care about the animals that they treat and they treat a wide variety of different animals. Everyone is extremely nice and compassionate and they don’t nickel and dime you! They kept me updated through the entire process even showed me his X-rays. They did a full work up on Oliver (my ferret), and even called the next day to check up on him! I would HIGHLY recommend them if you live in the New Jersey Area! I will be taking my Female ferret (Piper) there in a couple weeks to get a full work up too 😊

I’m happy to have found a vet that doesn’t unnecessarily overprice me for the appointments i have with my ferrets and for the vet techs/assistants for actually acknowledging my concerns I have about the condition of my ferrets and actually caring!

This is the best place you can bring your little ones in. All staff members were really kind and helpful. I want to thank vet tech Cory for taking care of our precious robo while we were waiting for the doctor to be available and for being very empathetic and gentle with her (we didn't have an appointment and came for an emergency). I want to thank Taylor for being compassionate and giving my husband and I privacy in the moment of grief while taking on all of the paperwork. And I want to thank Dr. Jennifer Cromwell for doing the best she could to help our Bonita on her last day on Earth and for being so knowledgeable, kind, and honest. Losing your pet is not easy, no matter their breed or size, but Animal&Bird Health Care Center did the best job possible, and not once did I feel judged for grieving a little hamster. I was not given the same luxury before in a different hospital, and that's I am also very grateful for.
