How to Save Money at Somerset Veterinary Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

As a brand new client, they took me right away, since I was very worried about some unusual growths on my boy, Rookie. From my initial phone call to make our 1st appointment there, I was greeted with extreme politeness and was given me all the info I needed in a cheerful manner. Once there, the women at the desk greeted us, again cheerfully, and was brought into a room in a timely manner. Both the tech and the doctor were very welcoming with rookie, and their calm manner made myself & my boy feel very at ease. The doctor explained everything in great detail and in a manner I could easily understand. I knew Rookie trusted them, even meeting for the 1st time, because he walked with them out of the room and to the back with absolutely no hesitation, which made me trust in the doctor as well. I cannot say enough to truly convey just how satisfied I was, so Somerset Veterinary, will become OUR veterinary care permanently, as long as they will have us! I will be taking my other boy, Deputy for his care as well; however this "nutty" one will put ALL their skills to the test! Thank you all from the doctors, techs, and office support staff for an excellent experience 🐶

This is a friendly, caring, and professional vet with gentle technicians, articulate and skillful veterinarians, and helpful, friendly staff. The waiting spaces are clean and cozy. The lab rooms are efficient and hygienic. Our cats receive quality and individualized care here. We also enjoy the personable vibes and sense of community.

My dog Emma has seen every doctor at Somerset vet group and they were all excellent, caring, and knowledgeable. The technicians and front desk always greet you in a cheerful manner and the vet office is always clean. I’ve been to other veterinarian offices, but this one has been consistently good in service, price, knowledge of animal health and friendliness. I would definitely recommend Somerset Vet Group over others in Central Jersey.

I cannot say enough about this staff. We went in because our dogs eyes were extremely red after a few days and we thought it was more serious than allergies. It turns out our dog had a very serious condition that required immediate emergency surgery. Our vet diagnosed the issued within minutes, thoroughly explained it to us and called hospitals herself until she got us a surgery same day (on a holiday weekend no less) and even got us a quote so that we knew what to expect financially. The advice of Dr. Abby Oratio and her technician Christine saved my dogs life, and I could not be more grateful for their rapid response to this situation.

I‘m a very thankful cat mom for the care Somerset Vet Group has given our cat over the years - especially their compassion and great communication with a dental procedure that has made her a much happier kitty. The vets were great at identifying her broken tooth and how it could get infected. Dr. Dekovich skillfully operated on her while the techs gently explained things to keep me from being too much of a nervous wreck. The cat came home with a gold star for bravery. ⭐️ The doctor gave me good advice on her post-op diet, too, and I now often look at the sweet void baby thinking of how far she’s come in terms of her eating and energy and all the people at SVG that helped her get there.
