How to Save Money at Basking Ridge Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough good things about Basking Ridge Animal Hospital and Dr. Hollo. After our other vet would not remove a growth due to concern of it being more of a major issue, Dr. Hollo came to the rescue. We have a pretty big, but VERY nervous dog that does not do well at vet visits. Everyone we came into contact with was so compassionate and understanding of his situation. When I first called, Nicole took the time to listen to my dogs history, speak with Dr. H about any suggestions, and had us in to see him within a week. At our appointment, Dr. H was exactly what our dog needed. He almost immediately offered to move to a larger space so he was more comfortable and was able to examine him and make clinical recommendations about treatment. He clearly “understood the assignment” and adjusted the appointment so our dog had a good trip. Surgery day was equally successful. Accommodations were made in order to treat my dog as he needed and I couldn’t be happier. Every single person that helped us was smiling, warm, welcoming and I’d definitely recommend them.

This is the most professional, friendly, and accommodating vet hospital I have used, They listened, worked with me, and created a treatment plan for my dog that was far from cookie cutter. All of this in a large and lovely facility with first class (maybe world class) vets and staff. I recommend highly.

I could not be happier with Dr. Hollo and the care our animals receive at Basking Ridge Animal Hospital. We have two very large mixed-breed dogs that we bring to BRAH for all our veterinarian needs. Dr. Hollo, has been amazing with our big boys. Our eldest dog thinks that Dr. Hollo is the bee’s knees and I'm pretty sure Dr. Hollo feels the same about him! Dr. Hollo is professional, personable, funny and an expert at what he does. He puts me at ease and answers all my questions with patience and humor. I wouldn't go anywhere else in town. I trust him, his team, and their medical knowledge implicitly. We recently, and accidentally, acquired a kitty. Dr. Hollo gave me MORE than a generous offer to give this rescue kitten the care he needed. His generosity will not be forgotten! Take your animals to Basking Ridge Animal Hospital. Dr. Hollo and team are the BEST!!

Dr. Hollo and his staff saved our dog's life! Our 9 y.o. lab/shepherd mix, Cooper, had developed life threatening symptoms in one day. Dr. Hollo dropped everything and did an emergency splenectomy. Cooper was bleeding internally, anemic and Dr. Hollo saved him. Within a few days of the surgery, Cooper had energy, was playing again and recuperating well. Everyone in Dr. Hollo's office was so kind and caring and treated Cooper like their own. Thank you to Dr. Hollo, Dr. Rotella, Dr. Blachek and everyone in the office! Our family is forever grateful for the care and love Cooper received while in their care!

We have a regular veterinarian that I won't name here with whom we were very happy. My dog developed a cyst on her tail near her body (but on the tail). We showed our vet and they told us to monitor it. I'll skip all the details - a year later as the cyst was growing our vet said that removing the cyst can cause her tail to be amputated, and suggested we drain it (at $200/visit). As we were deciding what to do the cyst was growing so rapidly we had to bring her in to drain it 2 times. They never offered any other options so I researched and scheduled an appt 5 weeks out with a highly recommended surgeon in Parsippany but the cyst was growing too quickly. I looked up Basking Ridge Animal Hospital, read all the reviews and called. Due to the urgency of my request, they got her in immediately. We were also going to Europe in 10 days. We were very stressed. They understood our situation, moved an appt, and scheduled surgery the next morning! GOING TO "BRAH" WAS THE BEST THING WE EVER DID. Dr. Hollo's surgical skills are excellent. Our dog kept her tail, it looks great, we went to Europe, (our daughter brought her for follow ups while we were gone), and we are definitely changing vets! Also, I went to BRAH 5 times before going away and never waited more than 5 minutes for our appointment. THANK YOU DR. HOLLO FROM OUR DOG AND US!!!
