How to Save Money at Alpha Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been using Alpha Vet since I got my first dog in 2012, and she spent her life being cared for and loved by all of the staff here until we ultimately had to put her to sleep in June 2023. After a few months of grieving, we were ready to welcome another pup into our home, and once we adopted, I immediately knew which vet we were going to use. Fast forward a few months, my 6 month old pup got his paw caught in a gap going up the stairs and started limping, so I suspected a broken bone. I called Harmony Animal Hospital to get him in for X-rays ASAP and took him that night, but now they wanted to admit him. I hadn’t been instructed to make him fast when I made the appointment, and now they were going to have to sedate him, which couldn’t be done until hours later because he had eaten. (Later they told me it was because he barked at them and that makes him aggressive). I left there a little more than frustrated, and made plans to call Alpha Vet in the morning. The next day I brought him here to his regular vet, and they were able to get multiple images of his foot…unsedated. They gave him support, pets, and love and made my vocal pup feel comfortable. We spent about 1/3 what the other place originally quoted for just an X-ray, and he got updated shots and medicines, too. They also allowed my son who was nervous going in the room with us to stay in the waiting area until we were finished with the exam. It’s been a few weeks since the break, and we have not had any issues. Thank you again for your compassion towards my puppy and the others that come here, it really shows in the work that you all do every day

Doctors here are so talented and helpful. Dr. Bose was like the cat whisperer with my pet. They get you in during emergency situations very quickly. I do recommend these guys to everyone. Unfortunately I don't know that they've been able to take any new patients recently but it's worth it to continue checking with them! They are wonderful!

We were just at Alpha Vet. Bruce checked our Scarlet out and asked the appropriate questions. Scarlet is a 17 years old Chihuahua Yorkie mix. We were told less than a month ago she was not doing well and to prepare ourselves. Bruce recommended several meds and a pro- biotic. Scarlet will be with us for awhile still! Thanks Bruce!!

Our fur baby cat was only about 1 when came into our home- he had been a stray that came up to me and my granddaughter back in 2012. We have only used Alpha Vet- 12 years now and we wouldn't want to go anywhere else. Dr. Bruce Frey just performed surgery to remove a large cyst and my fur baby is doing great! He's 13 years old. Dr. Bruce Frey was even kind enough to call us himself afterwards to let us know how everything went & to answer any questions I had. I completely trust him. They truly love the animals and do whatever is possible to help them. Communication is excellent, care is excellent and prices are reasonable. Everyone there is so nice, I wouldn't want to anywhere else! I Highly Recommend them. Mr. & Mrs. Fiolek

I have accompanied my parents to Alpha for my first two fur babies since I was 15 years old. My two rescues lived to be 14 and 15 years old with Alpha there to the very last breath. 16 years later, I bring my two cats here without fail. Each doctor has given each of my babies so much love, remembered their names, remembered their quirks, put up with their antics (many), and provided for each of their needs with utmost compassion. All of my babies have been immensely fortunate to have the Alpha Veterinary Care team throughout their lives.
