How to Save Money at Rockingham Emergency Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This hospital is absolutely incredible. I brought my Guinea Pig in today, who was wheezing and coughing. He had been seen by another Vet before who didn’t know the issue. Today, he couldn’t breathe so I rushed him in. The staff were so kind and compassionate and soon my Guinea Pig was seen by Dr. Lauren Steigerwalt. She was incredibly thorough and identified that he had an Upper Respiratory Infection as well as other conditions. Im so grateful, and just in shock at how kind and knowledgeable this team was from the front desk staff, to the wonderful tech, to the Vet herself. Absolutely recommend if you want the best of the best. Thanks!

unfortunately, i noticed my guinea pig was sick and called multiple places to find somewhere that would take me, and REV were so polite and fit me right in. There was no wait and the tech came out to greet me, ask what i thought was wrong and took my guinea pig back. Soon after the vet came out and was very transparent with what she thought was wrong and what my next steps were. unfortunately for me again, prices for pet care are high (not their fault that’s normal with every vet clinic) and i ended up deciding on euthanasia. the tech was very respectful and sympathetic to my grief and allowed me to take as much time as i needed to say goodbye. i didn’t feel rushed or judged in the slightest. they gave me multiple options throughout the process and made the hard decision easier to manage. i would definitely recommend them to anyone with pets as they know what they’re doing and are very nice while they take care of your pets like their own. it was nice to be able to grieve without feeling like a burden in their office. i just wanted to thank them for giving my guinea pig good treatment and taking care of her in her last moments.

I love this place and the Dr., my Lola was sick and they took such good care of her. Best experience I’ve ever had. The last year I’ve been dealing with vertigo and my poor dogs haven’t been out as much as usual. It’s been hard keeping up even with help from others. I’m better finally thank goodness! But I was nervous I would be judged. Not only did they not judge me but they helped me. I’m very anxious at the vet because of an experience I had many years ago (not around here) it’s torture for me to bring my dogs. This place was heaven for me. Perfect doctor and perfect staff. They made me and the dog at ease 😂

I had an amazing experience with Rockingham! My bunny, Maple Pancakes, had GI Stasis and we discovered it in the morning. Our normal vet recommended Rockingham to us, and we are so glad we brought our bunny here. Our doctor was very informative and compassionate. The other staff members (techs, the reception staff etc) were also very kind during this emergency. We received regular updates (like the very cute picture I attached) regarding our bunny and how she was doing which definitely alleviated our anxiety. Thankfully, she recovered overnight and we were able to take Maple Pancakes home the next day thanks to the wonderful staff and their care! I am so thankful for all members of the staff for their compassion and care.

From start to finish the staff was respectful, supportive and caring for our cat. The process to check in was efficient and quick as was the essentially no-wait time until our cat was examined. The exam provided was thorough, caring and very fair to us for what they did for our cat. While I hope not to need their services anytime soon, it's good to know that if we do, they're close by and someone we can rely upon. Thank you to Becky and Dr. Jamie for the compassionate care and thorough explanation of our cat's injury.
