How to Save Money at Animal Cancer Care Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We are so grateful that we were referred to Animal Cancer Care Specialists by Hampstead Animal Hospital after our beloved pup received his cancer diagnosis. The staff is very friendly, and Dr. Romansik delivers compassionate care with realistic expectations. He is very respectful of every type of budget, and gives care and treatment options/recommendations based on what you can actually afford. When we first got the diagnosis, we called several area clinics that specialize in cancer care. Some of them wouldn't let us talk to anyone other than the front desk, who couldn't give us any information at all. Most would not give us a ballpark price for x-rays, treatments, or even an initial office visit. Animal Cancer Care told us exactly how much a basic office visit would be, and gave us realistic ranges for treatment options, and they have continued to impress us as we have gone through this process with them. We can't thank them enough.

The staff and the doctor are excellent. They genuinely care for their patients and the families and provide the best care options at an extremely reasonable price. Our cat was diagnosed with an extremely rare and incurable form of cancer and had a rapid health decline at the end of 2018. The diagnosis was a shock and we were devastated. The doctor gave us excellent options that greatly improved our cat's quality of life. She became her old self and responded very well to the treatment. Her condition is incurable but it has given us time to cope with the reality and given us an opportunity to say our goodbyes while she's comfortable and happy. I highly recommend this place.

My sincere hope is that you don’t ever find yourself in need of a veterinary oncologist, but if you do then my family and I would highly recommend Animal Cancer Specialists. They have ‘office hours’ in both Windham NH and Westford MA each week and they were the first and only practice who we worked with over the past 19 months. Most importantly, Dr. Romansik possesses a depth of knowledge on both the industry standard chemo options as well as the more cutting-edge options for cases where the normal path doesn’t work. From day one, we were presented with all the options, we were given a professional opinion on what was the best route, but we were always made to feel that the final decision was ours to make. I have full confidence that our girl survived as long as she did because of the choice we made in working with Dr. Romansik. Secondarily, the entire staff at both locations (in addition to the now closed Newington location where we started our journey) treated our family – both human and canine – with a profound sense of dignity and respect whenever we were in the office. Medicine is a science and a medical practice could be forgiven if they chose to conduct themselves in a cold and sterile manner in their day-to-day operations. I mean, you’re there to get help…..not to make friends. The staff at Animal Cancer Specialists would always greet you with a smile, some sweet talk to any and all animals who walked in the door, and even gave Karma a little gift box after each successful round of chemo. We were never made to feel like our girl was ‘just another dog’ and we are truly grateful for the warmth and compassion with which we were treated. This was overall an exemplary group of men and women to work with during what was a long and at time challenging process.
