How to Save Money at Ocean Valley Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr.Lemire shares the upmost care for my animals, especially kitties. I always recommend for someone looking for holistic, with nutritional education, and passionate! Thank you so much Dr.Lemire!! Ive been a patient for almost 3 years now. He will always try to squeeze you in if its an emergency! Prices are super affordable. If you’re worried about the Dr’s “sharpness” or “rudeness”, he is truly just very knowledgeable in his profession and is right to the point. His staff is always very friendly and knowledgeable as well.

Dr. Lemire has been caring for my little girl for 3 years and he has been truely amazing. He cares so much about animals and their owners. I am heartbroken he is retiring. I typically don't trust many people with her and now I have to find a new vet :'( which is going to be difficult. I wish Dr. Lemire a very happy retirement and he will be missed.

0 stars. Never again. My problem isn’t the staff my problem was the Dr. I went here with my pup at the time and I was beyond belief with what I was hearing. I felt so bad for the assistant because of the way he was speaking to her and making her feel like she isn’t doing her job correctly. I’ll never forget how he made me feel let alone the staff and other customers. The last time I was there he made me emotional for the way I was raising my FIRST pup. Little sly comments like “you couldn’t put her in a coat or carry her?” Yes it was winter, yes there was snow, was she quickly walking in the parking lot in the snow? YES! She is a pup and maybe the cold would have made her have to pee before I bring her to see you. Better yet just mind your business. Trust me, there are much better places you could bring your fur baby.

I find the doctor very knowledgeable. He can be a bit odd, abrupt and sharp. But he is a good vet. I truly believe he cares very much for the animals. If he didn’t, I would not return. I like his vet tech. I believe her name is Emma. Very reasonable pricing. Try it Update…the rudest vet ever!!!

If there were negative stars I would give that. Completely rude and unprofessional. First time we visited them was back in 2017-2018, with our dog Bell. The nurse was super nice but the doctor was a condescending jerk. Our Bell was a rescue and we knew she had issues with men as well as vets and we communicated that to him beforehand. He gave us sedatives for her, that didn’t sedate her very well. Bell had bladder stone issues and we didn’t know much about it at the time. We tried giving her treats we had brought and he yanked them out my hand. Told me “she can’t have those, what was I thinking?” Bell was a panicky mess and he told us that we(my wife and I) had to put a muzzle on her ourselves and left the room. We were unable to do so, so we left. I understand we were a difficult case but there was no help or compassion from him whatsoever. We were at a loss as to what to do since she needed to be seen. During the visit not only was he rude to myself and my wife, but also the nurse assistant. We were able to find a suitable vet for her somewhere else. Fast forward to today. We have had numerous emails, phone calls and texts from this vet telling us that Bell has an appointment coming up. Not only did we NOT set an appointment with them since our last visit but we had to put Bell down for other medical reasons. When we expressed this to him, his response was “well you must have set the appointment and how was I supposed to know you never notified us.” I know this review is long but I don’t review things negatively very often. I wanted to make sure I expressed how much I dislike this business.
