How to Save Money at VCA Animal Medical Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
This clinic is one fine oiled machine. The staff is amazing and the doctors are top notch. While our tech visit turned into a full blown procedure at the end of their long day, you would of thought it was the first visit of the day and they wanted to make sure my dog was well cared for. Their communication with you while your pet is in house is excellent. I’ve never had a human doctor take the time to explain medication, symptoms and diagnosis like Dr. Grotz did, thank you! I also appreciate how they keep you informed on your bill so you are aware what it will cost. Very helpful. Thank you VCA Portsmouth for taking such great care of our little guy. You guys ROCK!

I'm blown away by the care we received today. VCA was my 7th panicked call this morning as I searched high and low for an exotic vet that would help me. Ending the phone call with Lanie to arriving for our appointment all happened within 2 hours. Knowing that guinea pigs can decline quickly it was so comforting to be helped so urgently and to have my concerns heard. Highly recommend bringing your pets to VCA! The staff is top notch!

I got ripped off and my money stolen at this place, STAY FAR AWAY!!!! I was called in for a consultation, and instead of the doctor coming in presenting himself and telling us his name, he didn't. Instead, he proceeded to jump on top of my animal to check him all over, to then after ask questions about why I am here and what I wanted. On top of that, interrupting me and assuming things instead of listening and comprehending because that's how you communicate properly with a person, you listen to understand not listen and spew nonsense out of your mouth without properly listening to the person, especially when you interrupt and or assume without even letting them speak. I went in for a consultation and to ask questions and to see how much this and that would cost me. To first speak about it. I did not go in for you to give my animal a physical exam on your terms and conditions, to then at the end slap me with a bill that's over 100 dollars. I will not EVER recommend anyone to go to your location because of the lack of communication and RESPECT that you guys did not care to give because all you guys like to do is rip people off of their money. Worst experience ever in trying to find a vet for my animals after moving to a new place!

Amazing experience-I cannot say enough about the staff here. Incredibly kind and friendly making sure both myself and my dog were comfortable. Honest and upfront about procedures and pricing. I drove over a half hour up to VCA and it was totally worth it.

My cat entered the office in pain and probably dying, and left with no pain and on the path to recovery. Jenna and the vet who's name I didn't catch were both great. This office worked with my budget and had financing available. Also they were able to see my cat on short notice. 5/5 Couldn't ask for a better office.
