How to Save Money at Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

It has taken me a few months to write this - so here we go. On July 31st at 9:24am we lost our sweet angel furbaby, Max. My husband and I were vacationing in York, ME and we knew something was terribly off with our dog. I called my regular vet and they recommended that we take Max to Port City Vet because they didn't think he was going to make it home to Massachusetts. I called Port City Vet and from the moment I spoke to someone they were nothing but kind and treated us with the utmost respect. As soon as we arrived there were 3 employees waiting for us and they took Max immediately and led us into a room. About 30 minutes later the doctor came in and told us there was nothing they could do for Max but make him comfortable until we could see him and say our goodbyes. They brought Max to us and let us have our last moments with him, the vet was even crying with us. There aren't enough words to express how incredible the team at Port City Vet was to us during this awful time. They carefully went over everything with us and let us know our cremation options and let us hold Max for as long as we wanted. It was one of the worst moments of my life but Port City Vet is truly incredible. When we got back from Maine, they sent us a beautiful card with Max's paw prints and most recently we received a beautiful letter stating that Port City Vet had made a donation in Max's name to Ethos Discovery - my husband and I were blown away by this. We have cried everyday since losing our baby boy, Max and life has been difficult to go through without him. He was our baby for 13 years. They had Forget me Not Cremation Services contact us and they were equally incredible and kind. Max is now home with us in a beautiful urn. Thank you to Port City Vet for taking care of our beautiful boy. Your team is incredible. In the future, if we do ever get a dog again, they will be my 1st choice in veterinary care.

Veterinarian “Dr. Natalie Levesque”’, veterinary technician “Hope” and administrative staff member “Kateland” along with others were terrific! My 23 and 1/2 year old cat developed sudden loss of her rear legs from an apparent blood clot. The decision to have her euthanized didn’t come easily because she was a lifelong friend to my now adult children living far away. This cat was our last living pet connection to their childhood years. The cat had been with us thru my kids loss of their grandparents, uncles, and others. This abandoned cat who came into our lives as a new born ball of fur was a real member of our family. The veterinary team understood the situation and my desire to be with the cat for every step of the euthanasia process. The veterinary team all demonstrated real compassion and kindness on every level. In fact, I told Dr. Levesque the cat’s euthanasia was far more relaxed and comfortable than any human passing I’ve experienced! At the end of the day, the veterinary team demonstrated their tremendous patience with me and commitment to high quality animal care decisions. Our cat is buried in our backyard garden area with one of her favorite toys and a piece of our hearts. Many thanks to this veterinarian hospital for being there when needed and having such caring staff who really listen and understand! By the way, this was my first time using this service as my regular veterinarian was closed. They were absolutely tops in everything they did for my cat and me!

Last Monday I said goodbye to the love of my life-Little Bit, who was a 15 year old standard poodle. I came at 3:15 am as she was losing all of her functioning-both physical and cognitive. I was the only one there, which was nice. It was quiet and calm and the perfect time to say goodbye to her. I was treated with tremendous respect and kindness. While losing your beloved companion is certainly life altering, I will always remember the experience I had with tremendous gratitude. Thank you for making the saddest day with my dog one of ease and grace.

Cannot say enough about this hospital. Our 13 week old goldendoodle ingested something harmful at our long time day care provider. We got to Port City, they ran out, grabbed him, took him in to assess him. They brought us to a small room where we could wait (pace, cry). They gave us regular updates, treatment options, and lots of necessary info. They were wonderful. After some fluids, we went home and our puppy is totally back to his regular puppy self. We had also used this hospital for our previous goldendoodle, who passed at the age of 14. He had been in and out to oncology for a couple of years. Again, wonderful, compassionate, and informative doctors and staff. The best!

I was playing with my cat with the feather on a fishing pole toy and the clip that holds the feather got caught between the toes on his front paw. He raced around the house dragging the pole with him. When he finally stopped to rest I wrapped him in a towel and tried to open the clip to remove it. Every time I tried he yelped and struggled so I thought it may have pierced between his toes. It was evening and my regular vet was closed so I called Port City. They got me in for an appointment right away, we had barely any wait in the waiting room, and when they brought him out back to take his vitals they were able to remove the clip. It hadn't pierced his paw! Since they didn't need to treat him they didn't charge me for the visit! The staff was very friendly and professional and I was very pleased with the whole visit. Thank you Port City!
