How to Save Money at Atlantic Equine Services
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so thankful for Dr. Maher and the Atlantic Equine team. They are the best of the best. I have known Dr. Maher for over 10 years and he has always provided the best care for my horses. He is available at all hours of the day and will drop anything he’s doing to help out. In May my horse had a horrible shoulder injury and Dr. Maher and his team provided exceptional care and my horse had a full recovery and was quickly back to work. If you want your horse to receive exceptional care, you won’t be disappointed choosing Atlantic Equine.

Dr Maher, Dr Britton, Dr Bartol, and Dr Mackin have all been super professional, knowledgeable, experienced and helpful in every way that top sport horse vets ought to be. Dr Maher has diagnosed and accurately treated several horses for us that were mysteries or just not quite right where previous vets couldn't figure them out . He is very dedicated to the care and maintenance of the horses. He loves and respects horses deeply. You can tell he truly loves what he is doing and he takes time to explain in detail the issue with each horse to myself or any of my clients so that we all learn and understand and can make the best educated decisions possible for our beloved horses. He truly cares about my clients and works very hard to protect them and their financial, and emotional investments. He is extremely sensitive to the fact that not everyone is a millionaire and tries very hard to come up with treatment plans that are appropriate for each horse and is affordable for each clients budget as much as possible. No, they are not the cheapest in the local area, but their prices are very competitive for a group of super educated and capable vets who travel to many the top A rated hunter/jumper shows in the Northeast, Florida and Europe. Dr Bartol has come to give clinics to teach all my students about various ailments like ulcer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Dr Bartol is a walking encyclopedia of internal equine medicine and we are so thankful for her knowledge and her sincere care for our clients horses. For one of our horses with a very serous condition that took several months to clear up, she was especially diligent in checking up on him and working way above and beyond what most vets would do. Both Dr Britton and Dr Mackin have stepped in smoothly when Dr Maher is away and provided accurate diagnosis, excellent advice, care, and treatments. Dr Mackin knows every horse in our barn and remembers every detail. Dr Britton has performed several PPEs and we have been very happy with her guidance and advice. The team at Atlantic Equine Services is one of the very best in sport horse medicine and they all provide quality care to our entire barn of top show horses. I would highly recommend them to anyone!

Thank you Dr. Maher and Atlantic Equine for taking care of our horses. I always feel confident we get the best care for even the hardest cases. The systematic approach of finding the root of a problem and also being able to ask about the best course of action. To be made aware of the pros/cons and to be able to make informed decisions. Sometimes they are not the easiest and it is good to have a staff with the knowledge base that Atlantic Equine offers. Dr. Maher for lameness , great eye and the patience to deal with harder or sometimes older horses that have more then one thing going on . Making sure when looking at horses for purchase that we are aware of what the findings are, but also consider the clinical evaluation. With how much horses cost to buy and maintain it is better to be safe then sorry, Dr Kate Britton who keeps her cool even when a not so pleasant experiences arise, Dr. Bartol who can help with internal medicine and the general health. The vet tech's always have a smile and make you feel comfortable to trust them with your horse. I always feel we are in confident capable hands.
