How to Save Money at Southpaw Veterinary Clinic and Emergency Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't say enough great things about Southpaw and Dr. Lackovic! She is truly amazing and goes above and beyond in caring for both animals and their human families. Our two Great Danes absolutely love her, and the level of care she provides is unmatched. I only wish we had found her sooner! If I could give a million stars, I would. Highly recommend!

Our dog Blue has gone to this vet since he was born. Southpaw has always taken great care of him. Recommendations are always reasonable. I truly felt like they cared. Blue recently had a minor surgery here and recovered fast and easy. Very nice facility

I recently had the pleasure of taking my five large parrots and two bunnies to Dr. Shrader at Southpaw Veterinary Clinic, and I cannot express how impressed I am with both Dr. Shrader and his incredible team. After doing extensive research on vets who are members of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, I chose Dr. Shrader for his impressive background and experiences, despite the nearly 3-hour drive for me. Avian vets are limited in my area, and I had high expectations that were absolutely exceeded. From the moment we arrived, I was struck by how personable and welcoming everyone was. They helped me unload and get all the animals settled. Dr. Shrader’s knowledge and skill in handling large parrots without sedation is nothing short of extraordinary. It was a huge relief to find a vet capable of managing my five large parrots, some of which are not very tame, for extensive blood work and grooming, alongside examining and spaying my two Holland Lop bunnies, all in a single appointment. Most vets closer to me either refused to see my macaws or imposed strict limits on the number of pets per visit. Typically, the process of spaying the rabbits would require two separate appointments – one for the exam and another for the surgery, both difficult to schedule. Amazingly, Dr. Shrader agreed to see all seven of my pets and perform the two surgeries in one timely visit, providing thorough and exceptional care for each one. Additionally, the cost of the comprehensive care provided was about 50% less than any other quotes I had received from other veterinary clinics. Part of a huge cost of many of these other vets is they also required using general anesthesia for routine examinations and noninvasive procedures. Instead Dr. Shrader and his specially trained team know how to securely restrain and minimize stress without the need of this unnecessary (and expensive) risk. The warm hospitality, high-quality care, and significant cost savings make Southpaw Veterinary Clinic the clear choice. If you are looking for a personable, extremely skilled, and knowledgeable vet who provides excellent, high-quality care, supported by friendly and competent staff, all at a fraction of the cost, look no further than Southpaw Veterinary Clinic. For the sake of my birds, pets, and other exotics the long drive is absolutely worth it!

I am so thankful to have found this clinic! I have exotic pets and have always had a hard time getting in quickly with other veterinary offices --- if I was even able to at all. They have saved my Flemish Giants (rabbit) life when he had swallowed a puppy pad and it created a large blockage. My Rabbit is 19/20 lbs and very hard for me to syringe feed myself. The Vet took the extra time to do a demonstration for me so that I felt more confident doing it at home. (Somehow, he made it look really easy though.. which, it is not 😂) Moving that blockage wasn't an overnight process and I had to take Jeff in for IVs about 3x during that process but they always made it so easy to drop in the same day. I'm certain without them he wouldn't have made it! Thank you! They have also removed my holland lops top and bottom front teeth due to dental issues (causing his jaw to be misaligned). That went well and my rabbit is much more comfortable now. I have even taken in my pet rat to have an abscess removed in his jaw. My rat did end up passing but together we made the choice before operating once he cleared the infection and realized his jaw was broken. (Happened prior to bringing him in). They were compassionate with me and helped me through the process. The only 'down side' is that at times I've had to wait long periods to be seen.. but when you're asking for same day appointments, that is to be expected. I am just happy I was able to get in at all. I also have had to wait as an emergency came in but I also would rather wait than them turn away an emergency patient. Their office is clean, friendly, kind, all of the above! 10/10 recommend !

We called the clinic on a Sunday at 1:00 about having to put our corgi down and got an appointment for that evening at 6. They said if we had to come earlier to just let them know. We called back right away and had to go in. They got us a room quick and allowed us to wait for our son to get there. We held up a room for about an hour and got to say our goodbyes as a family! Southpaw is not our normal vet but they made us feel right at home with compassion. I would highly recommend them to anyone!
