How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

So so thankful for this clinic and the wonderful doctors and staff - they saved our dog and her pups last night!! I’m a vet tech and a nurse, so I understand how crazy and stressful emergency medicine is, but every person here was kind and took the time to listen to my concerns and come up with a plan that worked for all of us, despite the constant influx of patients they had coming through their door. When the situation with our dog turned even more emergent, they remained calm and compassionate and discussed all options and we walked away with the best possible outcome. I had called other emergency clinics that were a bit closer to my house and had been talked over top of and my concerns were dismissed - I’m so glad I followed my gut and drove the extra distance to Lincoln. I truly wish this clinic had regular clinic hours too, as I would love to have them as our ‘regular’ vets! Thanks again for saving ALL of our babies - 10/10 recommend!

I feel sad even negatively reviewing another veterinary clinic as I work in the field and understand everyone is understaffed and more busy than usual. However: last Saturday I took my 11 year old dog in on emergency-he was showing obvious signs of anemia and truthfully I wasn’t sure if he was going to make it. I called in advance to see if I could get an appointment, they said they are walk in only, so I expressed my concerns and let them know approximately what time I’d be there through my tears. Upon arrival I sat in the lobby full of other patients and clients anxiously waiting to get their sick pets in for close to 45 minutes, the gal at the front desk walked passed me multiple times and never said a word to me until I finally asked for a check in form. I had all of my pets medical records with me and offered them to the tech in which she replied “those aren’t going to help right now” being I knew he’d need blood work done again I thought this was strange because this would give them a reference of where he was only 10 days before this visit. The doctor seemed nice, although after they ran bloodwork I was told my dog would need to be hospitalized until Monday because he has severe anemia, pancreatitis and that he was hemorrhaging somewhere in his GI Tract but they didn’t know where and possibly a blood transfusion. I agreed and made it clear I did not care about $ I just wanted my pet to be healthy. Before leaving my dog with them, I asked if I’d be able to visit the following day and bring in his medications to which the same technician said “we’re not going to take up a exam room so you can come visit we are very busy” I then asked if I could leave his blanket with him and she then responded “it will just get lost in our laundry” I was dumbfounded. If losing the blanket in your laundry was your concern then just don’t wash it? If he soiled his blanket I would have been happy to wash it at home. I also asked if I could call and check in on him to which again the same tech said “sure- but if you call to much we will tell you to stop calling” the bedside manner was awful. I was clearly in distress and I had never left my pet at a veterinary clinic that I was not directly a part of his care. Because I am in this field I know how taxing it can be, but I felt zero compassion or understanding from the day staff we encountered. The following morning I called and asked if I could bring my pets meds to them and visit him and I was told yes, upon arrival I was told my dog was getting discharged. This was shocking news because his condition only 12 hours prior was seemingly urgent and he was not stable- but To that I was extremely happy, thinking he must have had a big turn around and I felt hopeful. Until Monday morning- my dog woke up unable to walk, ataxic, projectile vomiting, and lost control of his bladder. Which lead to him needing a emergency blood transfusion and a referral to Kansas state and then ultimately leading to a grave prognosis that I feel should have been caught- After looking over the medical records sent home with me. No radiographs were taken, the only thing done was hospitalization and bloodwork. For $1200…I then brought the medications they sent home with me into the clinic I work and the doctor had put the wrong instructions on them so I had been giving them wrong for 2 days. This has been devastating. The overnight staff is why I am giving more than 1 star- they were all so kind and accommodating and it felt like they actually cared about the welfare of my dog, outside of the overnight staff this was a terrible experience. Being the only 24 hour emergency clinic in Lincoln I understand that it is hectic and again short staffed. However if every single patient that goes in can’t get a thorough examination and proper diagnostics done there has to come a point where clients get referred elsewhere, so the level of care doesn’t go down. This has been the most agonizing few days of my life, and this place was supposed to be my pets frontline and I can’t help to feel as though they failed- miserably.

Showed up at 6:50pm on a Friday night, no one in the lobby and promptly filled out the paperwork. 5 minutes after I arrive and waiting patiently, another person walks In and says “my cat can’t pee” - they immediately take the cat back and treat it. 4-5 other people come in and get placed in a room and seen by staff. I continue to wait now 1 hour into it with no sign of anyone coming to help. I called to ask if I needed an appt they said no, I drove an hour to have my pet seen. I’m not mentioning what’s wrong bc it’s irrelevant- I showed up before others and felt I needed my pet seen as an emergency and the level no zero F’s given is mind boggling. I haven’t raised any concerns or complained, I’ll sit here until they see him because I don’t want my pet to die. Unfortunately, if he does, for whatever reason is wrong with him, it’ll be on Dr Perez and staff. Stay away if you have a true emergency, their idea of prioritizing ones pet over others will piss any owner off. You’d be better off trying to see your private vet. I have no clue what’s wrong with my pet which is why I’m here… but apparently no one gives a F.

The hospital staff is awesome and very polite and caring. They took really good care of my very sick dogs that got food poisoning. The hospital was really good about keeping me posted on how the dogs were doing. I would highly recommend this place to anyone that needs emergency services for their beloved pets. They are just simply awesome! I was very pleased with the care and time the vets spent with my dogs. The vets are very knowledgeable. And very caring of your beloved fur babies.

They saved my dog’s life! We are currently on a cross country move from Alabama to Washington. We stopped here in Lincoln for one night (so we thought) to rest before heading on. About an hour after getting here my Great Dane, Boston, started showing signs of bloat. I wasn’t 100% sure that’s what was going on but I was scared to death it was. I called and they told me to come in right away. They saw Boston immediately, confirmed it was infact gastric torsion and got him into emergency surgery right away. Without a question, they saved my baby’s life. And every single staff member was kind and caring, and so so so helpful. I am forever thankful to them.
