How to Save Money at Red River Animal Emergency Hospital & Referral Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t thank the team at Red River Animal Emergency Hospital enough for the incredible care they provided to my dog in a critical situation. From the moment we arrived, the staff acted quickly and compassionately, ensuring my dog received immediate attention. They diagnosed the issue promptly and started treatment without delay, all while keeping me thoroughly informed every step of the way. When my dog needed to stay overnight, they went above and beyond by sending regular updates and even pictures, which gave me so much peace of mind. The level of professionalism, kindness, and dedication they showed was truly outstanding. I highly recommend Red River Animal Emergency Hospital to anyone in need of exceptional care for their pet!

The most amazing pet hospital I've ever seen. Everyone is awesome and so nice. They really did everything they could to make both my cat and me feel comfortable. The vet called me at 10pm after doing a procedure to explain the entire process and results, and was very patient and kind while I was ugly-crying. They sent me "goodnight" and "good morning" texts with photos of my darling cat while she was hospitalized, which I think is a lovely and important touch. Your pet family is in good hands with this hospital, absolutely. ETA: Houdini the cat is home now and doing much better. The vets and techs were very helpful in explaining the medication and care she will need, indefinitely. I see other (negative) reviews complaining about the costs, but honestly I think these are reasonable prices to pay not only for the level of 24/7 care your animal will get, but also I'm sure it's not cheap to run a fully-staffed 24/7 animal hospital. I get that money doesn't grow on trees, but I would cut off my hand for my pet family if it meant saving their life. Anyway, Houdini says a big THANK YOU to all the staff for saving her life 💜

A couple weeks ago I had to bring my oldest girl Emily in for a life threatening emergency, and as I am from Grand Forks, it was so scary having to leave her, but Red River Animal Emergency Hospital took such amazing care of her, and kept me in the loop the whole time she was in their care. I also loved all the photos they sent me of Emily! If it wasn’t for them, I don’t know if my baby would still be here. The Vets were so kind, and gave me so much hope that she would get better! Because of them she is home and doing amazing! I can’t thank them enough for taking such good care of her! Thank you guys so much! ❤️

Red River Animal Emergency Hospital was wonderful when my husband and I had to bring our dog in for an emergency last minute. They seemed to truly care and understand how we were feeling. Everyone there seemed nice and educated. The clinic is really clean and beautiful too. I loved how nice and caring everyone was. I also love the updates and photos. Thank you for taking care of my fur baby girl Lipton. P.S. She's getting stronger and she started walking again! We are hoping that she will continue improving and we know it will take a while and a lot of work for her and us. Thank you again for all the help and service. We appreciate you all!
