How to Save Money at Missouri Valley Vet - Commerce

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had an absolute panic over my dog not feeling good, not acting like herself, teary eyes. She's an old lady, but still runs around like she's a puppy. I was able to get in on an emergency appointment on Saturday. She had some tummy upset, accidental switch in food by me, and conjunctivitis. I started her on the meds as soon as I got home and within an hour she was way more energetic and happy. The next day, the swelling around her eyes is way better and she's doing way better and ready to chase the evil birds in my backyard. She's been my ride or die since I got her 8 years ago. I'm willing to go to the end of the earth for her. Everyone at the clinic Saturday were amazing. Dr. Andrew was so easy to work with and seemed very knowledgeable. Thank you for taking care of my baby. I can't thank you enough.

We were traveling through town and found our dog had a problem she needed to see a vet for, and were able to get her seen here on an emergency basis. This office was so efficient and quick and reasonably priced! We were back on the road within an hour. Much appreciated!

Receptionist are rude, have to ask them to leave a message for a vet. Talked to the vet and absolutely gave no advice for our sick calf, didn’t even ask questions on what was going on. Needed a prescription for antibiotics no large animal vet as available until 5:30 if they have time to call us back is what we were told. Had a horse cut the back of his foot on barb wire, called after hours emergency line since we knew he needed to be seen asap. She told us might as well just bring him in the morning since all she was going to do was wrap it and wait for another vet to look at it in the morning.she really didn’t want to turn around and come back for that. Funny how another vet clinic (Interstate Vet) will do the work for Missouri. Never had animals there yet but the ladies at the front desk were absolutely awesome and were so much help. Will be doing our business there for now on.

They cared for our cat and got him in immediately when he was sick. I was in a total panic and so relieved when they examined him. Thank you so much for helping us. This is definitely a very good place to go.

These guys saved my dogs life. My miniature schnauzer became severly ill in a matter of hours and was near death, i took her in on a sunday. They swiftly diagnosed her and within hours she has a life saving surgury. They kept her there for 3 days and my bill was only 1100, for everything. This was well worth the price. They were so kind and considerate. I even got to go in before the surgery and see my sweet dog, not knowing if she was going to make it.
