How to Save Money at Heartwood Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Best vet I’ve ever been to. I’ve been going to Heartwood Animal hospital for a few years for my cat, and now also with my new puppy. They go above and beyond and you can tell they genuinely care. I wouldn’t trust my fur babies with anyone else. Highly recommend!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Heartwood Animal Hospital for my fur-baby's first veterinary appointment, and I must say that the experience surpassed my expectations in every way. From the moment I reached out to schedule the appointment to the moment I left the facility, the entire staff exhibited a remarkable level of professionalism, compassion, and expertise. When I initially contacted Heartwood Animal Hospital via email, I received a prompt and friendly response from Amy. Her eagerness to assist and her willingness to accommodate my scheduling preferences instantly put me at ease. She patiently addressed all my concerns and answered numerous questions, demonstrating a deep understanding of the importance of providing comprehensive information to a first-time dog mom like myself. Upon entering the facility for the first time, I was immediately greeted by cheerful staff, Kimberly and Amy, who exuded warmth and genuine care. The facility itself was visibly clean and well-maintained, giving me confidence that my baby would be receiving top-notch care. However, what truly impressed me was the level of consideration and empathy shown towards my pet's anxiety. Recognizing my baby's fear, the staff kindly offered us the option to wait in a separate area, away from the waiting room. This small gesture made a significant difference and allowed my dog to feel more secure and calm. During the appointment, both the staff and Dr. Sheppard exhibited exceptional professionalism and expertise. They handled my pet with great care, ensuring her comfort and well-being throughout the entire examination. Dr. Sheppard's approach was both gentle and thorough, and she took the time to explain each step of the process, addressing any concerns I had along the way. As a first-time dog mom, I greatly appreciated the wealth of information and guidance provided by Dr. Sheppard and her team. They patiently answered all my questions and offered valuable advice on various aspects of my pet's health, including diet, exercise, and preventive care. Their willingness to educate me demonstrated a genuine commitment to ensuring my pet's long-term well-being. Overall, my experience at Heartwood Animal Hospital was nothing short of exceptional. From the friendly and attentive reception to the knowledgeable and caring staff, every aspect of the visit left a positive impression. I feel fortunate to have found a veterinary practice that goes above and beyond to provide exceptional care and support to both pets and their owners. I highly recommend Heartwood Animal Hospital to any pet owner seeking a place where their furry family members will receive top-quality care and compassion.

Today, I took my newest baby to heartwood. We absolutely love them. My first baby "Winchester " loves this vet. He gets so excited when we pull into the parking lot. They know him immediately. I trust them for anything concerning my fur babies. We really love Dr. Shepherd.

I have nothing but good things to say about the staff at Heartwood Animal Hospital. I moved to the area in August, and was thrilled to be so close to vet care for my animals. My dog wasn’t acting normal, and shortly after, he was diagnosed with kidney failure. The vets were amazing at suggesting treatments to manage the symptoms, and when my dog wasn’t feeling well, they always managed to work him in. One of the vet techs, Cathy, was a godsend for in home subcutaneous fluid administration. She heard I needed help, and wasted no time in coming by my house and assisting and providing useful information to make it be easier to administer fluids. Unfortunately, my dog stopped responding to treatment, and we had to let him go. The staff was very sympathetic when I went to pick up his ashes shortly after. I would suggest this clinic to anyone looking for quality treatment of their beloved fur babies!
