How to Save Money at Porters Neck Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I take all 6 of my fur babies here, and all of the doctors, technicians, and staff are wonderful with all of them. They always go out of their way to make each visit personable, and comfortable for you and your pet. One of my 6 if a very fearful, and reactive dog whom they take the time to go slow with, and go well out of their ways to help him at each visit be less fearful and reactive. He has gotten a million times better thanks to the help of the PNVH crew! Huge thanks to Brandi & Dr. Sarah Baldwin as well who typically our pets see. They are phenomenal at their jobs, and very knowledgeable as is the whole staff that works there! They take care of your animals like they are their own, and it shows. Their level of patient care is hard to come by! Loki says thank you!

We started bringing my dog to Porters Neck Vet in 2020. Up until this year, we had only come in for routine check up visits. We’ve had to visit a bit more this year due to kennel cough that turned into bronchitis, and then most recently for a surgery (tooth and eyelid tumor removal). I’m very pleased with the care my dog has received, especially from Dr. Rebecca Simmons. My big lanky boy wouldn’t go potty or get in the car with his e collar on and unfortunately it only took him pawing at his face once to injure his eye/eyelid area where he’d just had surgery. This accident shook me up and left me extremely anxious and worried about my dog. Dr. Simmons was extremely kind and compassionate to us. I appreciate the care she provided and how her team squeezed us into the schedule so he could come in every few days to get his eye checked. I’ve also had a pleasant experience with each of the techs and front desk staff. Thank you so much to everyone here for taking such great care of us 🐾❤️

This place is absolutely amazing and has completely exceeded my expectations! Everyone here is so kind and goes above and beyond. We recently switched vets due to being very displeased with service and cost at our old vet and we had to wait a bit for a new patient appointment, but it was well worth it. We had two appointments (one for each dog) set up and prior to the first one I was called to confirm and I had to tell them unfortunately we lost our older dog a few weeks before. The girl on the phone had no idea, but still apologized for calling about it and for our loss and was so nice. Then last week I got a hand signed letter from everyone about how sorry they were for our loss, even though our one dog never got to go there. So few places offer such a good experience and they have been so wonderful with my other dog as well! I 100% recommend taking your pet here so they get the best care with the best people and their prices were better than several other vets I checked with!

Yesterday we had our first visit at Porters Neck Veterinary Hospital, and I’d like to take a moment to share how positive our experience was. Our chocolate lab, Murphy, is prone to seizures and eating things he shouldn’t.. lol. Dr. Simmons was absolutely fantastic. She took the time to listen to our concerns and comfort Murphy, as he was a little nervous. She talked us through treatment options with compassion and made us feel certain that he would always receive the best care there. The technician with Dr. Simmons (I believe her name was Bella) was also very kind and handled Murphy well. Special thank you to Tiffany Blanton for the recommendation!! I am elated to have found a veterinary hospital that really cares about their patients and their owners. 10/10 recommend!!!
