How to Save Money at VCA Broad Street Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The doctors and staff are so compassionate. Never an easy decision, to let go of a beloved animal, they gave us additional time well past closing hours to accept the choice and say goodbye to our fur baby. When we returned for her ashes, there was a lock of her fur and they had washed and given us the blanket she had passed in. Thank you guys so much for this and the excellent care you took of Sweet Pea through the years. Highly recommend VCA.

We just started going to VCA and the Dr. that we met the first time was less than pleasant. In all honesty, I’m surprised we went back but she made mention she is not usually at that location so we returned. We came back today for a concern we had with our dogs paw and met Dr. Sarah F (not sure how to spell her last name). She came in with 100% energy and I immediately adored her. She has the best bedside manner, the sweetest personality, and our dog was head over heels for her. She is without a doubt the best veterinarian we have came across for our babies and is 100% the reason we will be back. The only cons I have: The wellness fee is pretty expensive. There are many practices here locally that charge $40-$60 for a wellness exam, and this location charges almost $100. Lastly, they don’t carry Heartgard or Nexgard. :/ Thanks Dr. Sarah for being the perfect person for us today. Your sweet energy truly made this rainy day brighter, and you’re without a doubt the reason we will be back.

We have been taking our dog there for the last 15 years. It’s been a rocky relationship but overall they’re close to our home. We have Care club through them, which is taken out of our credit card every month. Unfortunately, the card on file had an expiration of April. I called this morning because my dog was yelping Every time he tried to use the bathroom and was panting. I called up and they refused to see him because the care club was not paid up from the month before. I told them that was fine that I would pay out of pocket if they could not update the Care club account immediately. The first woman on the phone said I would have to call care club before they would see my dog, even though he was in a lot of pain. She put someone else on the line who then told me they could update the Care club account over the phone and after that they would see my dog. I can’t believe that they refused to make an appointment for my dog when he was in so much pain and I was willing to pay out of pocket and then update the Care account on Monday. It’s it’s obvious that their policy is about the money and not our pets. Consider this before signing up for care club are using this facility.

This is probably the worst vet that I have been to in Fuquay. I had taken my dogs in May of 2023 to get a Canine Influenza vaccine as they were the only clinic in Fuquay who had the vaccine in stock. When I first brought them in I was told they would need a full physical exam for both dogs for them to get only a flu shot which is fine, but what they did not tell me is that with the exam fee and the shots would be $150 per dog. I unfortunately missed the booster appointment, because I am out of town I had my sister call to get them rescheduled them to get a booster. My sister was told that they would have to get the shot again since the booster has to be within 3 weeks which was fine. But what they didn’t tell her was that they would need another full exam as this is their “policy.” They also said that because the dogs were seen by a new physician within the practice that they would have had to charge the exam fee anyway even though that doctor works within the same practice. This was all made known to me only AFTER I called to understand why two vaccines cost $300. My sister was never notified of any of their policies while she was at the appointment. Not only that but I was notified that for any vaccine if the dog has not been seen within 30 days you will always be charged a new exam fee. None of these policies were explained to me or my sister prior to my dogs receiving the vaccines. I would not recommend ever using this office as they will overcharge you for any service that you receive. There are much better options in Fuquay.

The best around! They took great care of my baby when she was living and also reached out to me when they found out my fur baby passed. We just got a new fur baby and there’s no place I trust more with her than VCA and their staff.
