How to Save Money at Smoky Mountain Integrated Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Words cannot express how wonderful this place is. Every single one of the doctors and staff are knowledgeable, compassionate, and so helpful. Having multiple pets with multiple providers over the years, it is no exaggeration that this is hands down the best provider we have ever experienced. Our beloved dog was sick and dying and Dr. Matt and the staff were so supportive throughout, even after his passing. He went through all options and it is clear that he makes recommendations on what is best for your pet and family, rather than what makes them the most money. This experience made all the difference in the world during an extremely difficult time.

Dr. Matt is one of the most knowledgeable, kind, and skillful vets I've ever had the pleasure of taking my dogs to (in over 25 years of owning dogs). I feel so blessed that we found him. He genuinely cares, and blends the best of natural, holistic methods and allopathic treatments to ensure our dogs get the best care without undue side effects. Our family will be clients of this clinic for life. The staff is wonderful too!

Great vets for pain management for pets. My older Aussie has arthritis and her treatment included acupuncture and shock waves, and some meds. Dr. Matt treated her.

Dr. Matt is great! My girl started seeing Matt a few months before she unfortunately crossed the rainbow bridge. We knew that time was coming soon however Matt took great care of her always spending time discussing ways to treat her and make her as comfortable as possible her last months! He always called to check on her and return my calls making medication adjustments as needed and staying update on her condition . When the time came to make the dreaded discussion to end my girls suffering Matt and the staff were great and compassionate! I highly recommend him and the staff!

Dr. Shearer and her staff are the most dedicated and professional veterinary staff my husband and I have ever experienced in our dog's very long life. "Pumpkin" landed in a shelter about 16 years ago after being used as a "fight dog". She was pregnant with 9 puppies. We found good homes for the puppies and Pumpkin became ours for the next 16 years. Although we may be near the end of Pumpkin's long life, Dr. Shearer and her staff have given her and us a comfortable place to make that decision that is so very difficult between life and death. Her extensive knowledge of western and non-western veterinary medicine has given Pumpkin extended quality of life that we had thought was not possible. Her exam rooms have sturdy glass panes that go down to about 8 inches from the floor. This enabled our dog to watch the scenes outside the door with interest instead of focusing on her stress about what was to come with her exam. Since she is a geriatric veterinary specialist, her clinic has special washable large rubber pads that line the hallways and exam rooms. This enables older dogs who have trouble standing on the usual slippery floors to stand and walk without fear of falling. Dr. Shearer and her staff do not have that stressed approach to care that one sees in many clinics which try to pack too many visits into the vet's daily schedule. We are grateful to Dr. Shearer and her staff for making these last times during our dog's life a time of gentle goodbyes, love and good times, rather than the loneliness of wondering if anything more could be done.
