How to Save Money at Swansboro Animal Hospital Emergency and Trauma Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The service we received was superb granted upon arriving. I did have to remind them that my dog was in respiratory distress so we didn’t have time to wait for them to input another Client information into the computer although I do understand they were dealing with an emergency themselves for Office. Staff were very kind and I wish I remembered the vets name who helped us. She was a tall lady with curly hair and glasses. She came out and listen to me with my concerns. Definitely agreed with my recommendations, which is not why I’m saying she’s such a good vet, but she took the time to listen and then if she had any feedback or any other medication’s to maybe deviate to treat his symptoms. She suggested that as well, she was also able to look at the prescription that the first emergency vet gave us and that just needed to be adjusted my dogs weight . Their cost was significantly lower and I wish I would’ve put in the GPS that it was only 30 minutes from my house. Initially I thought Swansboro was 45 minutes however, looking back I probably would have used the Jacksonville emergency clinic first as we did naturally just because it was 15 minutes at the road from our house and my dog was in bad condition. We are animal people and know people who are in rescues and unfortunately I didn’t have time at 1 AM to call them and see which emergency clinic they recommended just because due to my own stress and my dogs stress but I have been very impressed. Thank you for giving me a realistic expectation of Mickey’s prognosis and we will be considering quality of life if we cannot get his routine and or care under control.

The entire staff is amazing. The woman working the front desk did an amazing job. As did the Veterinarian who cared for my Charlie Brown. I did lose my best friend, but I take comfort knowing they did their best and they stopped his suffering. They didn't have to let me in so late at night and on a holiday weekend, but they did and that shows character and heart. I miss him and I'm beside myself, but I truly appreciate their dedication. Thanks to the entire staff!

Swansboro Animal Hospital Emergency and Trauma Center is definitely the best emergency vet around! My corgi got neutered and the next day was lethargic, couldn’t walk and was passing out. My home vet couldn’t see him on Saturday so they referred us to SAHETC and as soon as we walked in he passed out again and they immediately started oxygen and an IV. He ended up staying over night and the doctors called me that evening and the next morning with updates! I couldn’t have asked for better care or compassion! These people truly care about these animals and will do everything they can to save them. Our experience was with Dr. Greenlaw and Dr. Harmon and they were both amazing!

This place was very professional. All of the employees and dr's were so nice, respectful, knowledgeable, kind, and they were very prompt. They took my dog back immediately and started treating her. She had to stay overnight and they took such good care of her. They even called me at home each time a new Dr. came in on shift and kept me very informed of her condition and treatments. They sent me home with medications to give her and very clear discharge information. I honestly recommend that if you are in the Swansboro area and have a pet emergency, please call them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Swansboro animal hospital, for the way you treated me and my yorkie Izzyboo.

After having to wait months to get into other vet clinics for an orthopedic consult, I contacted Swansboro ER and was told Dr.Guttroff did orthopedic surgeries and was willing to look at my puppy, Wonton. Wonton has many limb deformities and is a more complex case. We got a consult within 2 days and discovered through xrays that most of his issues were congenital and couldn’t be fixed surgically BUT his front legs could be operated on to give him a better quality of life. He was on the surgery schedule within 2 weeks and has surgery on both of his front legs. He was kind enough to fit him into his very busy schedule and operated on my sweet boy until 9pm which I am so grateful for. We overcame several hurdles throughout his 8 week recovery but Swansboro was there for us every step of the way. He is now almost 12 weeks post op and doing so good. He is romping around and has such better mobility. Dr.Guttroff is truly passionate about orthopedic surgery and so knowledgeable. Every question I had, he had the answer. Thank you for giving my sweet Wonton new life!!!
