How to Save Money at VCA Animal Hospital West

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been going to this vet for 30 years dating back to Dr. Eubanks. Like many other pet owners my puppy is part of my family. When selecting a doctor for myself I expect that there will be a Doctor at the office when I need care. I also expect compassion and an urgent need to help me feel better. Needless to say I expect the same for my puppy. I also have a puppy care package that I pay $80 dollars a month to take care of my pet. In the last year I have needed care for my puppy who was sick usually throwing up and not eating very lethargic 3 times during business hours and been told that they could not see her for 48-72 business hours. Resulting in an emergency hospital doctor visit cost at least $450. This time today all the doctors are in a meeting and are not available to return a call or to assist in any way. This network of veterinarians are not in the business of taking care of animals they are in the business of helping your on as need basis on their schedule. I highly recommend finding a veterinary that is not affiliated with VCA.

The people who run this place are absolutely wonderful. They provide very good, sincere and professional service without charging insane amounts. We had make the horrible decision to put our cat to sleep and they were the perfect amount of somber, compassionate, and and professional about the whole ordeal. They even gave us a clay imprint of our cats paw with his name on it, asked what part of his fur we wanted and gave us an cat angel pin and seeds to plant in his memory. They sent his remains for cremation for us at a very reasonable price and they were also wonderful and did a great job. 10 Star experience for sure.

Took really great care of my pup who recently got surgery here. Sent regular updates of my dogs surgery progress and felt included in the process. Prices are fair and they make sure to inform you of treatment/procedure costs before going through with anything. Thank you VCA!

VCA Animal Hospital has the best team with the leadership of Drs. Jackson, Gronneck, and Julienne. All of the vet techs and hospital staff are kind, caring, and put the needs of our fur babies first. They also do not forget the hoomans. I have personally lost 3 of my babies in 2020 due to cancers and autoimmune disease. We lost our last baby in 2021. It was a hard year, but they were caring and compassionate and did everything to keep our babies comfortable and prolong their lives until it was truly time to let go. As they passed from this world, the staff would lie in the floor with us or hold tight to us as our babies became angels. There was no rushing or acting as if they were just another dog. The caring did not stop with our babies' passing. They checked in on us far after our babies' passing. We have all been treated as family. I can speak for our experiences. I would also like to say that I realize It is costly to care for our fur babies There are those that don't appreciate the cost, but no matter where you go it will still cost maybe more than you think but prices are high everywhere for everything. I live month to month, but I chose to adopt these babies so I don't complain because they are my world. I feel that my TEAM does the best, and they are worth everything. I appreciate that they give me upfront estimates and honesty for procedures and inform me when testing is unnecessary. I don't feel like I am being taken. Now I have 3 new rescue dogs and 2 adopted cats. They are treated as family by my VCA team. I love this TEAM. I can't thank you all enough. Be kind to our pet professionals...they do their best for your little ones.
