How to Save Money at Oak Heart Veterinary Hospital at Person Street
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
This review is long overdue, as we relocated to Raleigh at the start of the year and established care at the Person Street location shortly after we settled in. The staff is so friendly and we've been so pleased with the care provided to our senior pup by Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Sawyer. We had an after hours emergency recently, and the sister location on South Saunders was experiencing a high volume of ER patients at the time I called to let them know we were on the way. They referred us to a competitor with a shorter wait time, and we were seen immediately, reinforcing my belief that Oak Heart truly prioritizes the safety and well-being of their clients/fur babies. Thank you Oak Heart for the wonderful care you provide.

We love this vet! We see Dr. Hamilton- she is truly the best! She is very good at what she does and her approach is calm and supportive. She offers different options for diagnosis and treatment of a pet depending on your situation and options available. We saw her multiple times when we had an elderly diabetic cat and she helped us navigate treating him the best we could while also keeping him happy and comfortable. We wanted to avoid stressing him too much with extensive testing & procedures. She listened to us, saw the relationship we had with our kitty, and helped us navigate what was best for him while taking his feisty personally into account. Although we were able to control his diabetes fairly well, we ultimately helped him cross the rainbow bridge after he developed a rapidly growing cancer. Dr. Hamilton made it so peaceful and comfortable - just what we would have wanted. Dr. Hamilton now cares for our 7 month old puppy and Peaches LOVES going to the vet. Even when getting her vaccines she was always comfortable and happy to say hello to the staff. There’s nobody we trust more and the staff is always available to help answer questions and guide you when you need it. I’ve recommended this vet to all of our friends and will continue to do so. Thank you!

Oak Heart Vet on Person is such a great place for my little old ladies. My two 17 year old cats are high anxiety because of a bad experience at a vet office when they were little. Oak heart has a soft hand working with them and worked to get them on a sedative regimen for visits that makes things easier. They have taken great care of my girls who are starting to have kidney and thyroid disease and have taken the time to help me find the best kidney diet for my cats even when they are picky eaters and we have to go back to the drawing board repeatedly on food and medication delivery. They really are so kind and patient with the animals!

Couldn't recommend this place more! I moved back to the area and decided to take my English Bulldog back here because we were always roomed immediately after arriving - this was very important to me as he was not dog friendly, and they made so many accommodations for him to keep him and the other animals safe in the facility. He had suffered from allergies, and seemed to be getting more chronic ear infections. Dr. Sawyer suggested that I switch his food to a reasonably priced plan (because who doesn't love saving $$$ while also taking care of their fur baby?!) and his ear infections never came back. Not only is this a great location, but they're less than a 10 minute drive from their emergency vet facility. The staff there helped me through the decision to say goodbye to my little man, gave me the time and privacy to say goodbye, and were compassionate and sympathetic through the entire visit. I want to thank you all so much for caring for my best friend while I had him!
