How to Save Money at Care First Animal Hospital at Oberlin

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Love love love Dr Joe and his team. Such wonderful people! They have care for our furry family members for nearly 25 years! Update: 4-2023 Still the BEST vet in the area. Puppers are there right now for a much needed spa day. We are really looking forward to the opening of the new hospital!! Update 62023. Dropped the girls off today for a spa day. Baths, brushes, nail trims, ears cleaned. They are so comfortable and happy to go off for a pampering day. Thanks Dr Joe, and Dr. Page for keeping our babies so happy, healthy, and beautiful!!!

We don’t live in Raleigh and had to come here on a whim while on a visit, when my dog (Zelda) hurt her leg. We had the best care and were treated like family/valued clients. Dr. Geis helped explain what had happened to our dogs ACL and the next steps for when we get home. So thankful for her and her team. Doggy injuries are sooo scary and I left feeling confident. (((Shout out to the lovely vet tech that assisted her 💜))) (((a pic of our beautiful Zelda happy and healthy, like she will be one days again!!!)))

Twice. TWICE this amazing group of people has saved my dog. The first time was 5 years ago when I brought her in for a lump next to her spine that no fewer than three other vets had misdiagnosed. It was an aggressive round cell cancer. They removed it, and for 5 years, we had no other problems. All of the sudden a growth appeared in my now 13-year-old malamute's mouth. It grew to over two inches extremely quickly. We had moved two hours away, but none of the vets in our location were either reasonably priced or even a fraction as caring, competent, and kind as Care First. They scheduled her immediately and removed the large cancerous mass without requiring a jaw resection, etc., and at about one-third the cost of our local vet hospitals. They were patient and helpful throughout the entire experience. They checked in the very next day to see how she is (that's today). We went from thinking this was the end to getting to keep our girl a while longer. Thank you.

Dr. Wages and Dr. Gordon are incredibly experienced and caring! I am so grateful how they have cared for and treated my dog. My very large dog has had not one but Two TPLO surgeries for CCL / knee repair at Care First with these amazing doctors. After the first surgery, which was the worst repair, my dog would occasionally do something to himself to cause himself to limp. I was at max anxiety. Even though it was the Friday before a holiday weekend, Dr. Wages was thorough and cared for my dog as if it were a regular day, doing x-rays and double checking him to make sure he had healed properly from his first surgery. I can’t express how grateful I was for her care of my dog and me. In addition, my dog had continuously had an ear infection for over a year that we could not get rid of. She learned the various nasty things that were going on in that ear, and gave him a bespoke cocktail that got rid of the infections in several weeks. It was amazing … again! And she showed us what we needed to do to keep his ears healthy. The staff are lovely too. You can tell they love and are kind to the pets. Huge thank yous to the doctors and staff! Don’t change, we need practices like yours.
