How to Save Money at Animal Emergency Hospital & Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Awesome service, great attitude and true caring about pets and owners despite what can be really high stress situations. Went above and beyond to make a difficult situation less tough on the humans (adults and tiny humans in tow too) - the coloring books for kids, juice boxes, snacks, and coffee for adults, made it just a little bit easier to get through a really tough day. And you took great care of our pet! Thank you! We appreciated all the support which was much needed - and we are full of gratitude for the caring staff and providers who helped our pup (and us) get through a really exhausting day.

Deeply compassionate care for our dog at an extremely difficult time in our life. This was the last place we wanted to be, but looking back I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. The entire team here deeply understands your animals', your companions', pain. When we brought in our dog we knew that he was at the end of his life but even at that point, the staff gave us every perspective they could offer and were honest about his condition. We ultimately decided to say goodbye to our dog of fifteen years which was heartbreaking. The staff were full of empathy, understanding, and patience for us to have our last moments with him to say goodbye. Even while receiving IV and check ins, he rarely faulted as the staff made such a welcoming and calm environment. Losing a friend is so hard, but saying goodbye to ours through this team made it the least harsh that it could have been. Thank you so much to the team during our visit, after our care, and the messages of support we received after our visit.

Called because my usual vet was dealing with too many emergency’s, and my Hen was dying. Lady on the phone was kind, and understanding of my delay when I wasn’t able to get there as soon as originally planned. They got me in the room in minutes, and took temperature, and weight. After I explained her previous, and current symptoms we agreed it was best to euthanize. It was very peaceful, and my hen fell “asleep” in my arms.

We were referred for surgery for our baby Moose on Easter Sunday, very hard day as new puppy parents. However, the support and compassion each of the staff members showed was comforting and made us confident that we were leaving our baby in good hands! Information/education was provided throughly and updates were given each step of the way. We found out Moose had swallowed a green breakaway collar from being in his litter which was over a month ago, the collar didn’t become an issue in him until this Sunday. He was lethargic and not holding down anything and laying by himself which was not normal. He got the surgery and the recovery has been as great as it can be. Eating, drinking, going to the bathroom, interest in toys…. All the things he wasn’t doing prior to surgery. They cared for him before and after surgery and made sure he was comfortable even if it did mean not being around someone 24/7 which can cause some dramatics with Moose. We can’t thank you all enough for everything that y’all put in towards the care of Moose! Always will be greatful! To be sitting here in bed with him now while he rests comfortably is a blessing and we are ecstatic to have our normal menace baby back! Wouldn’t be possible without each of you!

Considering this place is intended for emergencies, writing a review about my experience is important. This team handled the circumstances with extreme care with myself and my pup Xena. Xena is fear-aggressive which I can imagine is challenging for the team to maneuver. They made sure that she was safe and gave her amazing care. They even let me come in the next morning to help her take her medication and eat. Kimberly answered every question I had, and both Vets were wonderful to speak with. The front desk team..caring, compassionate, and supportive. I am so grateful to you all and thank you for doing this difficult job. I am sure not every day is joyous, and I appreciate that you still lead with a caring and warm heart. 🩷 My pup has all her medication she needs to remain pain-free during healing, I received recommendations for pc vet, and now know I can call you all for emergencies in the future and have excellent care
