How to Save Money at Carr Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my newest addition, an 8wk old Rottweiler, yesterday to have her first checkup with the vet. The staff all the way from the front desk to the technicians who started the appointment were absolutely world class. My pup was calm throughout the ENTIRE process, no hints of stress whatsoever. The Veterinarian, Dr. John Carr, was absolutely amazing. I went in with my own preconceived notions about how I wanted things to go, having several years of vet med experience personally. Dr. Carr listened to me and explained the pros and cons to any questions I had. He was very thorough and I can say with a certainty that I left that hospital with alot more knowledge than I had going in. There was no sense of judgement or apprehension from the doctor even though there were glaring gaps in the knowledge. He presented me with all the appropriate information and allowed me to make a decision. I would recommend this hospital to anyone who is looking for a smaller, more personable staff that will go the extra mile for their clients! If I could rate them over 5 stars, I would!

We had a great experience when we established care of our fur babies. Everyone from Brandy at the front desk all the way to Dr. Carr were excellent. Pretty sure my dogs fell in love with the vet tech, who gave lots of pets and snuggles while in there care for exam and blood draws. My older dog had an infection in his elbow and Dr Carr was very knowledgeable about the type of treatment he needs, as well as helping me trouble shoot his food issues. The younger one (who can be a bit hyper) was relaxed while getting her wellness exam. They provided a calming environment that my two dogs felt like they just left a play date, not a health visit. My anxiety about their health is relieved and I know they will be taking care of here.

I have been to lots of vet offices and hospitals over the years. This office is one of the best. Very clean facility. Communicative staff. Scheduled an appointment online. Dr Carr is patient, honest, very knowledgeable, and kind. Hard to find a vet office with all those qualities. They did a great job with my nervous boy and I highly recommend them!

I have been seeing Dr. Carr and his staff ever since I got my cat about 2-3 years ago and they are the best vet ever by far! I recently adopted a new puppy and they have taken wonderful care of him. Luca even had an emergency and they were able to fit him and make sure he was okay. They always call and check on my pets after a visit, and they always remind me of appointments. The staff are so caring and informative and answer any questions I have. I moved about an hour and a half away a few months ago and I still drive my puppy and my cat to see Dr. Carr and his staff! I’ve been to many different vets and none of them have compared to the service they offer. I definitely recommend anyone looking for a vet to come here! Your pets will be wonderfully taken care of!

I recently moved to the area and tried a few vets for various issues with my 3 dogs and i was very unhappy and mistreated at everyone until i found Carr. My experience there was amazing from the time i walked through the door until i left. The place was very clean. Everyone was professional, responsive and honest. Dr. Carr was straight forward to the point, and didnt dwindle around the bush on any answers and addressed every single one of my concerns with intelligence, and listened to my responses, i did not feel rushed in any way. The nurses were absolutely fantastic and provided calming conversation during the visit while visiting with my dog. The service was 5 stars. Most importantly, they were not afraid of my dogs nervousness around people. They handled her well. Will be back for a follow-up, and for once i can say I'm excited to visit the vet.
