How to Save Money at 3H Equine Hospital and Mobile Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Outstanding, unparalleled care for my horse!!! Dr Cardenas is incredibly bright, innovative, caring, and a truly brilliant diagnostician and rehabilitation specialist. When no one could determine what was wrong with our horse, Dr Cardenas took a step-by-step approach to a highly complex issue, using world class technology and techniques to pinpoint the issue. Once determined, 3H has state-of-the-art rehabilitation approaches and faculty who took our horse from lame to sound. I cannot say enough about the medical practice, general equine daily care, and the caring nature of each team member. Everyone was friendly, answered all of our questions, and was genuinely concerned about our horse. He was so happy at 3H we almost felt guilty getting him back to work! The Office Manager for 3H, Deon Spencer, is incredibly knowledgeable, organized, and trustworthy, and helped us with every step of the process. The rehab team is outstanding. Finally, Dr Cardenas is truly world class and we are grateful that we have this amazing resource in our community- and even more grateful that they cared for our beloved horse.

They're the best. We took in a rescue who faced some serious health challenges at 25 years old. 3H dove in with us and showed up every single day going above and beyond to beat the odds and help us get her healthy again. We're really critical customers with high expectations, and they met our expectations with ease and then some. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to 3H.

I will always be incredibly grateful for the compassionate, comprehensive care Dr. Cardenas gave our pony after she suffered a major injury. Needless to say, it was a very emotional journey, but Dr. Cardenas was caring and patient with me as he explained her progress and helped me understand what to expect. He was also very kind to my daughter when we visited our pony at the farm. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We always felt welcomed and valued. The facilities are top notch and he used a variety of strategies to help our pony carefully heal. We call our pony "The Miracle Pony" but I know she is here because of the care she got at 3H. Enthusiastically recommend!

We’ve been working with 3H Equine for 17 years and have always appreciated, no matter the vet we were working with, their competent, compassionate care for our horses and pony and miniature donkeys, and the special care they have given to my senior horses. I also appreciate very much, as I know it is not always the case with vets, that they listen to and consider my thoughts and observations. We’ve worked with them from basic health and wellness to gelding to senior horse care, and when we’ve had the occasional emergency over the years they get here quickly and I know my equines are in the best of hands. Highly recommend this knowledgeable, creative, and caring practice.

I have been a client of Dr. Cardenas since moving to NC in 2018. He and the staff have kept my 3 sport horses in great shape for dressage training and competition. My schoolmaster, Joe, fractured his coffin bone in a pasture accident last fall. I decided to put Joe at the 3H clinic for rehab in Jan. Joe received the best of care...stall rest, treadmill work, controlled turnout, and initial under saddle work. During his time at the clinic I received regular updates from Fernando, and pictures and videos of him in treatment. He's now back at home, in daily work, and looks great.
