How to Save Money at Craven Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The care my dog has received here has always been good and I've had them call me to check in on my dog when she has had to make visits to the emergency vet and additionally check how she is feeling when she has been sick. The folks that work there seem to really care and follow up at times which is nice. The not so nice part is that it is incredibly difficult to get seen here in any kind of timely fashion whatsoever. Providing excellent care is wonderful, but if you can't ever get an appointment when you need one it sort of doesn't matter. I've had to take my dog to the emergency vet in Havelock multiple times because I am told the earliest I can be seen is a week, two weeks, or longer. Additionally, I can't imagine a more obnoxious system for trying to get seen urgently than just telling me "try calling back every morning right when we open for cancellations". If I have a sick or injured pet, I'm not going to sit on my hands and spam your phone lines every morning hoping I might get seen, that is not a plan. Really I genuinely appreciate all the things you guys do right but when I need you the most, you are rarely able to help me get my pet treated.

Best animal hospital. Large, clean, modern exam rooms and lobby. We never feel rushed coming here. Extreamly knowledgeable and friendly doctors and staff. Do your pet a favor, and check these folks out! Blue left happy, and so did we!

We take both of our dogs here and they receive great care! Felt the need to review and drop one star due to appointment timelines - I don’t think I’ve ever been seen at my scheduled time. Emergencies pop up, staff shortages, etc. I get it. But be forewarned - you’ll spend 2-3x longer than expected. The staff always thanks for patience and waiting though! 😂

I’ve been taking all of my dogs here for some years now and recently brought in our ferrets for an ear infection. Idk how I’m just now thinking about a review. This vet office is the best around, hands down. First of all they’ve saved two of my dogs lives. I have a girl we found with Addisons disease and a boy that has grand mall seizures. These doctors are swift! They’re so kind, Intelligent, And they really care about animals. Each doctor we’ve seen has been an absolute gem. They listen! The Techs and receptionists are a force too, you can just tell when people are happy with their jobs and it reflects in this business. Keep it up Craven Animal Hospital! You guys are doing it right for sure.

We have used CCAH for years for boarding and lately all medical. They help us put down our 15+year old labradoodle on 12/16/22. As heart wrenching as that is to watch your pet pass, you just could not have a better team of caring professionals at CCAH to help you through that. They are 5 star people and professionals.
