How to Save Money at Harbor Point Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our initial visit to Harbor Point was a fantastic experience! I researched many vets in the Mooresville area and, while there were a couple at the top of the list, we chose Harbor Point much to our satisfaction...even with high expectations. The front office is pristine, no bad smells, and the check-in process was super easy. We have a 9-wk old Cane Corso who can be a little shy at first. We noticed immediately that he felt comfortable with everyone on staff who interacted with him. The vet tech was patient with us during the initial consultation, making sure to gage detailed notes of all that we talked about. When Dr. Rothe (veterinarian) came in, she was extremely knowledgeable and thorough. She took the time to go over the vet tech's notes and helped us with all of our questions. When it came to discussing vaccines, Dr. Rothe helped us feel comfortable with what the mandatory vaccines are as well as the optional lifestyle vaccines available. Not once did we feel pressured or feel like they were being "sale-sy" or pushy. This was very comforting after reading dozens of vaccine reviews from other places that seemed to be pushy about it. All in all, I highly recommend Harbor Point Animal Hospital to anyone looking for a great overall vet experience.

Dr. Dawson and his Vet technician named Tina, took awesome care of my 130# English Mastiff named Moose this morning, he had double ear infections and a really bad hot spot under his right ear. Moose had to be sedated, his neck had to be shaved & cleaned, Tina sat on the floor with Moose and comforted him while Dr. Dawson shaved the area & Tina cleaned it. I just wanted to thank both of them for taking great care of Moose

This is the best vet I’ve ever been to. The entire team is kind, friendly, and helpful. Every interaction I’ve had with the staff has been positive. We have four dogs and they treat every single one of them so well and make sure all our questions or concerns are answered. They genuinely care about your pets which I feel can be hard to find. The facility is also very clean and well-kept. If you’re new to the area or considering switching your vet clinic this is the place to go!

Laying here tonight holding my sweet puppy boy ~ something that wouldn’t be possible without the kind souls at harbor point. April, you are our angel. Thank you and the entire staff for saving our baby. No words could ever express our gratitude. 12/10 would recommend bringing your pets here.

Absolutely terrible Payed almost 200 dollars for them to run a culture on my dogs ear as his ear was driving him crazy they "couldn't get a good swab" so they just told me nothing was wrong with my dogs ears he just has allergies. Also begged them to update my dogs shots and they wanted me to book another appointment for that. I had to pay another 200 dollars at another vet for them to tell me that my dogs irritated ears weren't from allergies but a raging ear infection. It's wild that they charged me for a culture they Couldn't even preform. To then tell me nothing was wrong with my dog. My dog suffered for weeks on allergy medicine I thought wasn't working until I decided to take him to a different vet and them to immediately find the problem by just looking at it they preformed a culture to verify that it was infection. No, it isn't a mistake it's my sister's and I dog. Xiao reid is his name
