How to Save Money at Hospital for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We drove over 2 hours and spent the night in a hotel prior to Spencer's dental surgery, and it was well worth the time, money and effort. Outstanding staff, great doc, clean and efficient facility. We were kind of in "sticker shock" at the initial estimate, but were more than pleasantly surprised when he didn't need any extractions and the total was way less than quoted or anticipated. We were able to pick up our special boy between 4 and 5pm and were home by 8. They called the next morning to check on him and told us they would be monitoring messages over the weekend if we encountered any problems which was reassuring. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRACTICE FOR DENTAL CLEANING AND SURGERY, especially when you have a pet with compromised health and age. I am SO grateful to have found an accredited facility within reasonable distance for us. I was ready to travel back to Texas if I needed. Very happy.

I had my GSD’s (Maya) first dental cleaning with our home vet. During the procedure, it was discovered that she has a narrow mandible that was causing her canines to puncture holes into the roof of her mouth. I was referred to The Hospital for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery. Every person I interacted with along the way was extremely professional and kind. To make the appointment, I was offered several very soon dates, leaving little wait. They asked great questions thoroughly at that time, and gave an expected treatment plan. My GSD has anxiety driven aggression. While I do help manage it with medications, the staff here made the process unbelievably smooth. They have a separate sitting area of the lobby so I could keep Maya separate from the rest of the lobby. We ended up being offered an exam room to wait in to help with Maya’s anxiety. Miguel was our tech yesterday (8/23/23). He was so kind to Maya, and was very gentle and patient with her, while offering her many treats. I believe they ended up making friends! The doctors were so great as well, still being kind and patient with Maya. They were very informative and explained everything (Maya’s condition, the treatment procedure, how the entire process would work, and any risks / side effects involved). I was given a price estimate and explained the details of that thoroughly. They gave me many opportunities to ask questions, raise concerns, and offer any needed further explanation of all discussed. I was able to get Maya in for her procedure the very next day (today 8/24/23). They had made a note that I was driving from two hours away. With my drive and Maya’s anxiety, they were able to offer me multiple accommodations. One accommodation was that they made her plan to be the first surgery of the day, which allowed her to be done sooner but also not have to spend time in the kennel/runs where her anxiety gets much worse. They were also accommodating by offering that I stay with Maya through sedation, and come back in with her when they woke her up. This way, Maya was never aware I was not with her and allowed her to feel less anxious before and after. We arrived this morning as planned and were greeted by friendly staff once again. We were offered the same accommodations such as waiting in an exam room as quick as possible, and I stayed with her through sedation. I was communicated with for an update prior to her procedure being complete and was also there when she woke up. I was given a thorough explanation of how the procedure went (she did great and everything went as planned). The doctors spent a lot of time talking with me about what to expect, and how to care for Maya going forward regarding healing from surgery. I was given a detailed summary of what was done with before and after pictures and x-rays included. They had even already sent the records to my home vet before I could ask! I was out with Maya by noon and my cost ended up being a lot lower than my estimate! Overall, everyone I had the pleasure of interacting with was extremely professional, kind, and accommodating! My dog is the most important thing in my life and I would recommend this practice to anyone! I was very pleased with our experience and appreciate everyone there SO MUCH. Front desk, techs, docs, you all rock and I’m so grateful for each of you! Also want to shout out to the staff from today: I am not sure I’m remembering the tech that helped us pre-op’s name correctly but I believe it might be Jacob, and Victor helped us post-op. Of course, another special shout-out to the two doctors: Dr. Queck and her incredible resident! Thank you all again!!

I called to see how soon they could fit me in, as my dog chipped his major canine and the pulp was showing. They said September but then transferred me to see if they could squeeze me in. Thankfully, they were able to get us in the next morning and do the surgery within the 72 hour time frame of being broke so a root canal was not needed! Thank you Dr Reynolds and team!!! Bandit is feeling much better!

We travel all over with our fur babies, and wondering if you can find care when needed is a huge concern. This concern was completely alleviated by Hospital for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery. We were in Charlotte for our son’s wedding and then staying with their pets while they were on their honeymoon. We noticed a mass on Addy’s upper gum and after consulting with our home vet decided it needed attention sooner rather than later. We got an appointment with a local vet, Providence Animal Hospital, and our worst nightmare was realized, it looked like cancer. Providence got us an immediate appointment at Hospital for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery and after a thorough exam, scans and x-rays it was determined the mass should be removed immediately. Addy had a successful surgery and is recovering well, while we await the biopsy results for our next course of action. While we don’t know definitively what that will be, we do know Addy has the best chance possible thanks to the incredible staff at the dental hospital. Thanks for getting these distraught travelers in so quickly and treating our baby like your own. We never doubted she was in the best place possible.

Whenever our dog is sick, it's always hard. Just like a lot of pet owners Duke is our entire world and we will do whatever it takes to get him back to feeling better. Duke was experiencing an emergency and we had a pretty long drive to get to get to the Hospital but when we got there we were meet with the most professional staff who understood the stress we were all under and really did everything in their power to make us feel comfortable. They kept us updated throughout the entire process and were just so patient with us and answered all of our questions to the best of their ability. I hope we don't need to go back but if we need to i'm glad I have them on speed dial.
