How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very kind person at the desk. Then terrible! Did not treat my dog and then charged me $92. Kept him in a cage all day, and when I asked him to treat him they didn't. I am a client who has a wellness program. Please help me find a good vet.

I am agree with other reviewers that the optimum wellness plan is the Biggest waste of money. My pet passed away on last month, they still charge the monthly plan fee. That is ridiculous. When I call to cancel the plan, the one who answer my phone had very bad attitude , he just kept talking, I did not understand what he was talking about . He kept saying I still need to pay the plan fee even though my pet was no longer needed it

Two stars because we were able to schedule us on Saturday for a Monday appointment, the doctor seemed nice on the phone but Communication/getting ahold of anyone is impossible!! I missed a call while waiting to pick my pup up. Took 30 mins to get ahold of someone. I called emailed and left a message. My husband and I took turns trying to get ahold of someone to the point I entertained just driving back to the hospital. After being in the chaos of picking my pup up managing meds and kids and payment I had questions on diet and meds. Stuff I didn’t ask or wanted clarification after talking on the phone with the doctor. I was told the doctor would call me after seeing a patient. I missed the call by two minutes. I’ve called numerous times to follow up because I wasn’t given a diet guideline for my pup who has an unknown intestinal irritation. I’m 400 in and still just confused as to what he can eat but I’m at least happy to know blood work came back normal. I get dropping off to see more of our fur babies but what good does that do if we can’t follow up or get ahold of anyone in timely manners on sensitive issues like my poor guys.

We have brought our dog and cat to Banfield for several years and this location is TERRIBLE at communicating and seems not care about its fury patients! The Harrisburg location is likely the only good Banfield, but due to the difficulty scheduling appointments there I suggest avoiding all Banfield locations. We brought our 6 year old dog Lola there because she was having issues walking/sitting as her back leg seemed to be causing her pain. They suggested a $700 x-ray which we agreed to and waited a week for any results. We called multiple times to get updates and never received any follow up. Finally the Dr called stating she would likely need a surgery and she would follow up soon. One month has passed and absolutely no calls or updates. Needless to say we are NOT continuing care with Banfield. I suggest finding a place that will actually care about your fur babies... BANFIELD GETS TWO THUMBS DOWN on customer service!

We have been going here for a long time and they have always had excellent doctors and nurses (always been very friendly and helpful) but they have gotten so busy over the last few years! 4/5 stars because of the 20 minute wait for what should have been a drop off. Also I needed a prescription filled for flea medicine it took a whole week just to get someone to sign on it. Take your pet early in the day. They probably need more staff and longer hours to handle the increase in business.
