How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Kilo Revenge

I am the owner of my blue cane corso kilo and I came to them yesterday for the first time in desperation after having a terrible experience at other Benfield’s!! I felt like they wanted nothing to do with my dog knowing his breed!!! This facility I can ensure you my experience was everything!!! They were super professional, knowledgeable, kind, super helpful even with my dog not being the friendliest. When I walked in it was a warm atmosphere really clean and smell nice. The lady at the front desk placed me in a room immediately. I didn’t have to wait at all my dog kilo vet tech Denise!!! Was amazing she was so knowledgeable I thought she was the doctor even the doctor was nice I am so happy I took my cane corso here I was almost in tears how they treated him!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!!!!!! Even the front desk ladies were amazing I felt like royalty coming here!!! Thank you guys for all that y’all do from the bottom of my heart

Be advised: due to a "new policy" Banfield is rejecting loyal boarding customers! We're now stuck with trying to find a new facility for our 17 year old Yorkie with very little time to find a trusted facility. We've had them watch our dog for years, in fact he just stayed with them in March! Our family Veterinarian, who we've been loyal to, is the one who recommended Banfield to us years ago for boarding after we had an emergency ICU situation at a doggy camp style facility. But now Banfield is refusing to keep our dog because we won't have them administer the 2 shots required to board. We've had our family vet do those shots every year (since our dog was born!). It's never been an issue in the past. Not sure where this "new policy" is coming from but don't let them catch you off guard and stick you in a bad time restraint situation. Our elderly dog and family are now under undue stress due to this company's money hungry policy changes! (Zero stars) A company that doesn't value ALL of their customers won't be a company for long.

Experience was absolutely terrible, nurse kept pushing a subscription service on us, she wouldn’t listen to what we told her, vet wanted to tell us he had behavioral issues even though he has had shots from multiple other vets and had no problems along with having a vet move his hurt hip while he was in pain 2 days before and had no issues once so ever I never leave reviews but this place was absolutely terrible didn’t warn us that the price would actually be higher than they originally said they said influenza shot would be about $50 and the bordtelle vaccine would be about $30 they didn’t mention they would be charging us for a exam which we didn’t ask for and no other vet I’ve been to charges for an exam when giving vaccines except for his initial and yearly exams will not have our business ever again and recommend staying away.

Went in just for a bordetella and influenza vaccine, got charged for a exam that we where not told was going to be added. Then proceeded to tell me and my husband (who also left a review) that our dog, a husky, had behavioral issues. Even though 2 days prior to this vet appointment we had to take him to the emergency vet for his hip, they rotated to see where it hurt and all he did was whimper and try to get away not once tried to “snap” at the nurse or doctor. He has been to MANY other vets and not once has he even noticed them giving him a shot or when he needed it, his exam. Not to mention the attitude the nurse had when bringing him back to the room saying “oooh he’s great just great” in a very very sarcastic manner, she also tried to push a monthly subscription onto us after we told her we are not looking to do a subscription. Also tried to argue with us about him getting his DA2PP, where they only put down it was just for distemperment and not the four actual diseases it covers. Also as we were leaving the “doctor” came out after us with a card for behavioral classes. I know my dog, and I know for a fact given I spend almost every waking moment with him he absolutely loves people and would never snap or bite someone. I will say that after he was brought back to the room he did not want to get close to the doctor nor was he interested in trying to interact with him. I do not like this place and will not be bring any of my animals here ever again.

OK for routine care. But apparently South Ridge is so overcrowded with patients that they can’t see my almost 14 year old German Shepherd who suddenly started having stroke symptoms (can’t walk, disoriented, incontinent). They gave me two options when I called them at 8 am: 1) take her to an emergency vet Or 2) drop her off there and the doctor would eventually see her later in the day and they would call me after I again explained to them she couldn’t walk, was disoriented and in my head I’m thinking it’s time to put her down. I don’t think it’s appropriate to ask a dog owner to “drop off” their elderly dog with symptoms this severe. I received ZERO compassion from them. I called a different vet and they were able to work me in due to my situation. You would think that after 20 plus years of bringing my dogs to South Ridge they would have been willing to do more to help my poor dog. I think most people would understand if you had to cancel their pets routine appointment for something like this. End of life care is extremely important for the animals and their owners. South Ridge needs to take a very close look at their process for handling these situations in the future or they eventually will lose more of their customers like they did us today.
