How to Save Money at Jacksonville Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my big pup to get his microchip , updated shots and records. This place was great! They were patient with my pup being a little scared and were more than willing to make him and I feel comfortable and confident with them. They were also funny and we were talking comfortably around each other. Great place! I got a appointment fast too! Even with being a new patient.

Jacksonville Veterinary Hospital is always great with my dogs. They deal with my German Shepherd's dramatic tantrums and try to offer the best options to fit my pet's needs.

Absolutely awesome Vet, vet tech, front desk ladies. I came in for a CONUS pet travel inspection. They were very meticulous, caring, and explained everything that I would need to ship my two cats. Also I received a warm welcome and assistance back to my truck. 10/10 highly recommend.

I took my collie there for the first time today. We were sent to a room that was filthy. In the bench chair was another animal's medical file complete with the owners information. We sat there for 1hour 15 minutes and saw a vet tech but never a doctor. After so long I started taking pictures of my shocking surroundings. In your response, you can accuse me of defrauding your clinic but just before I left I was told by your tech the vet was in surgery with another dog and she didn't know how long my wait would be. I did not pass anyone in the hallway. Was I supposed to wait another hour? I stayed initially because I wanted to have faith in your clinic. My dog was already stressed but I thought the process would get better. It didn't. And in closing, if this is how you publicly accuse a new patron because you failed to meet the standard care, shame on you. Update: I was charged $393.50 for this experience and I paid it in full.

I have been nothing but happy with JVH since I first took my pets there 4 years ago. They have taken excellent care of my dogs and cats and, despite always being busy, been caring and professional. Sadly, I lost my cat Binx--who has been with me for 12 years--earlier this week. Dr Thomas diagnosed her with cancer during a routine visit a few months ago. She was great then, compassionate and concerned, and took the time to explain all the options and give me realistic expectations. When I brought my dog in a couple of months later, she asked about Binx. She sees a LOT of families and it meant a great deal that she remembered us and took the time to ask. When I brought Binx in on Tuesday, I knew it was bad, and had delayed seeing another vet because I know and trust JVH and Dr Thomas. Again, she, told me the options, what to expect, gave me her professional advice, and then gave me as much time as I needed to decide. Though they were busy and no doubt needed the room, I never felt rushed. They gave me time to sit with Binx, took time to make sure she was comfortable, and gave me time to say goodbye after. They were so, so sweet with her, giving so many sweet words, pets, and even a soft blanket. It was a horrible day, but without their excellent care it would have been so much worse. I highly recommend this practice and can't imagine ever taking my animals anywhere else. Thank you for taking such good care of my family.
