How to Save Money at Hambright Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Hambright is great. The pricing is a little on the high side which has made us have to look elsewhere for certain services but we’ve been coming here since they opened their doors. Check ups, emergency type visits and vaccinations have always been great experiences. We had an incident with our Mini Aussie and they squeezed him in quickly. The staff has always been so great with all our animals.

Great Vet! Easy scheduling process, easy clear check in process, very fast but thorough, they didn't have me wait in a room for long periods of time which was great! They even called the next day to follow up on how my dog was doing!

I really love this veterinarian facility. I have 7 cats who have all been here for regular check ups, as well as for more serious incidents, over the past 2 years. Beginning with calling, even if it’s first thing at 7:30am or right before they close, the desk staff is always prompt & happy to help. On a couple of occasions when I have a sick cat who really needs seeing same day or asap, they squeeze us in & I appreciate that so much. Recently at closing time, I found an abandoned dog on the side of the road & they did a chip scan & helped to contact the owner who no longer wanted her to confirm turning over ownership to us so we could get her treatment. One of the lovely techs stayed late that day to help, & also came in before her shift the next day to squeeze the pooch in for a last minute appointment. I included a photo of said pooch during her pleasant visit, below! Each time no matter which doctor or technician we see, they do through physicals (some vets I went to before barely did a physical at all, missing important things!), they go over a few options for treatments instead of pushing a particular medication as some vets I have seen in the past do, for kickbacks I assume. They don’t have a massive display of pet food in the front, which again tells me they are not in the business of selling you things that won’t really benefit your pet. I love the report cards they send after each visit via email with a comprehensive analysis of my pets health & the appointment summary, & the cost each visit is fair. They also call within a few days after every appt to follow up & make sure things are going well with whichever pet I bring in. Overall, they are a truly fantastic, pet oriented place with kind staff & I obviously strongly recommend them!

Review is long overdue because they've been taking excellent care of my dog Wesley for years. Dr. Queeny is excellent. I've had 2 examples where I've had to go elsewhere on the weekend and then their treatment + recommendation didn't work and when I see Dr. Queeney he knows what to do and it's fixed immediately. He just seems way more knowledgeable than any other vet I've taken my dog to over 13 years. Besides that... they are always on time and it is a very efficient office with good service. I've never had to wait long for anything and I've never been rushed either with my vet time. The technical staff has also been great on every level. Once a 24/7 vet on Gilead prescribed a antibiotic that made my dog completely deaf, a rare reaction, that Dr. Queeney saved with a thorough ear flushing a few days later. His hearing came back and it means the world to me and surely my dog too. He's also been slept for dental cleanings a couple times and comes back not too high with Hollywood teeth that would make most humans jealous.

I am blown away at the professionalism of this clinic. Dr. Houghton's staff are so polite, caring and knowledgeable of their industry. If you ever need to call , the phone rings at most twice and there is someone else on the other line to help you and direct your questions. Front staff are so patient and kind and back clinic RVTs are so easy to talk to about your concerns. They know how to handle your animal in a polite manner , even when they aren't feeling their best. We just had our annual dentist cleaning appointment with Hambright and the packet they sent home was more than I would ever think of receiving. It included a detailed after care summary, dental cleaning plan for the future, xrays of the teeth and clear before and after photos of the teeth. Everything was so thought out and carefully curated for owners. I am so thankful Dr. Houghton is my vet, and I cannot recommend enough. Thank you !!!!
