How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my dog to Vetco for the first time for a check up and presented an issue with her paw being red. The front desk woman was very kind and sweet, she made checking in and out easy. The reason for my 1-star is because of the vet assistant and doctor. The vet assistant came into the room and was very rude and passive aggressive. She didn't introduce herself and responded with an attitude to every question she asked me. At one point questioned how long I've had my dog making it seem like I haven't had her for long (I've had her since she was 8 weeks and she's 4 years old now). She made me feel very uncomfortable and I wanted to leave right there. I kept offering to send her my vet records and she had me send them to the wrong email twice. Then proceeded to tell me because I didn't have records they'll have to run tests. I had the records sitting there AND I sent them 3 times. She didn't explain why they wanted to take my dog into another room or what "tests" they were doing. The doctor then came in and provided no introduction and it was a very awkward interaction. I will not be back and do not recommend

So… we added a second dog and this was his first visit. Caesar, our newest addition was a bit reserved at first. The minute the assistant walked in Caesar began to roam the room feeling less stressed about his visit. By the time the doctor came and she just sat on the floor with him he was ready to have all the attention! I believe the staff is very impressive the way they are extra loving on the pets and comforting to us (the parents). Explains the breed to me from a medical provider who specialize in our furry love ones. That did it for me. I will be returning even after Caesar finish his puppy rounds. Thank you again for being our go to vet!

If you love your pets do not use Vetco. Our girl Maia was a patient since we got her at 8 weeks old. She recently became really ill and we had to make the tough decision to have her euthanized at only 7. In the process of trying to get the help we needed from Vetco, we had to call an 800 number that is not locally operated and go through them to get in touch with any one at the local vet office. They never seem to understand what you are asking and it always takes forever. When your pet is that sick, being able to reach your vet quickly can be critical. We have another pet that we will be taking elsewhere going forward for this reason alone.

Yesterday I brought my two dogs in for their first physical exams as I am switching vet hospitals. We saw Dr. Cox and she was amazing with Blu and Gadget. I love that she sat on the floor and made me feel like my dogs were her favorite pets ever. She did very detailed physical exams and I had estimates in my email by the time I left for future procedures that I inquired about. The staff was very attentive to my dogs and the price is affordable -- especially for the area where some things seem to cost a fortune. The added treat of peanut butter made their day!!!!
