How to Save Money at Emergency Pet Hospital of Craven-Carteret

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Of course, my dog had to have a snake encounter on a holiday. My vet was closed so I called the Emergency Pet Hospital in Havelock. The phone conversation was precise and to the point. I was told the vet would be informed I was on the way. Coming from New Bern, I drove a little faster than I should have. The overall care that Gracie received was excellent. The wait times in the lobby and in the examining room were as expected. The only thing that would have made the experience less stressful is if I had been told from the get-go that it was not life threatening. I was kinda freaking out that she needed an anti-venom shot right away or it was gonna get bad. Other than that, everyone was very professional and nice.

Call before taking your pet in to be seen. The emergency waiting list might be too long to wait. They were very nice and listened to what was going on with our friends dog. They only had one dr working, so the emergency was not taking in anyone. They did refer us to another vet. We ended up putting the dog down in the end. It was a weekend, and emergency vet costs are high. He was old and had spine and hip issues. He got to say goodbye to everyone before going on his last final ride.

This hospital did amazing for my dog. My dog had eaten some Tom cat rat poisoning. My heart was destroyed because I thought he wouldn’t make it. He’s 3 lbs, a baby, and had no idea what was happening. He’s like my little baby so I care very much for him REAL REVIEW-I bought him there and they got him to throw up the rat poisoning and then kept him over night to clean out his system. When I came to get him in the morning he was hopping around smiling. I had spent the night before cleaning the house from head to toe to ensure there was no more rat poisons. Thank you Havelock Emergency hospital! Y’all did amazing for my little Niko

Mothers Day 2023 that Sunday Morning we had to let our 12yr old Great Dane, Lilly move on. It broke our hearts. Dr S. Stelma and his assistant made that process doable, we were at the right place with the right people to assist us. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Christine & Jim

Open nighttime hours only. Highly recommend this emergency vet! A literal lifesaver when our dog was in need. The staff here is so kind and caring. We took our dog in for an emergency and they quickly stabilized him and got him the medication he desperately needed. They recommended leaving him overnight to make sure he was OK, and they gave us a very reasonable estimate of the cost for his treatment and the overnight care. We paid a deposit and sadly left him there for the night. A little over an hour later, we received a call saying he was doing well and that he’d probably be happier at home with us, so we went back and picked him up. He was 100% better and so happy to see us! The staff informed us that they were going to refund part of our payment since our pup wouldn’t be needing overnight care after all. I don’t think I’ve ever had a vet refund me for anything! Thank you Dr. Arnoult, Caitlin, and everyone at this place for putting our pup’s wellbeing above anything else!
