How to Save Money at Guilford College Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have to say this place was wonderful to me and my dogs! I took my aging rescues here for checkups/vaccines and also to consider euthanasia for my 18yo rat terrier mix. She had stopped eating and drinking several days prior and could barely walk (she has been going starkly downhill for a month). Dr. Samoska was so compassionate and caring with her and gave us a lot of time to consider as we talked through options. He was up front and realistic, which I appreciate, but in a very considerate and compassionate way. The pricing was very clearly discussed before services began. I did not have to put any sort of deposit down. The front desk receptionists were both kind and professional. All in all, a good experience even during a tough situation. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dr. Samoska to my friends with fur babies!

Beware !!!!!!!!! They are crooks. They will give you a price, then run up your bill without notice. Came in for surgery I was quoted 3 to 5k. The vet told me after surgery that it was no complications and that I was closer to the 3k. I pick my pup up and get hit with a $6700 bill. I was threatened to have my pup taken by them if I didn't pay the difference. I put a 3k deposit down and was aware of $1200 to 2k more because of the $300 to $500 per day stay after surgery. They knew 5k was my max. Brought my lil Egypt home and the next morning took her out to relieve herself and notice her squatting but nothing coming out. I look at her rectum and it was poop and hair matted together that stuck in her rectum and it was matted so bad I had to cut it of. it had to be for a few days. See photos below. I will never come here again. I called to tell them about the poop and hair the lady hung up on me.

Took my kitten there one time and had amazing service wasn't expensive said he didnt need a check up fast forward 2 weeks I went another time now it was very critical I got told I needed to pay a 1000$ deposit before they could exam him even. I told them I did not have it they pronounced him dead while he still had a heartbeat all the way home. Clearly this is not a practice where veterinarians are known to care. I highly suggest taking your pets elsewhere there is a big reason for their 2.5 star rating. Take the advice and go legitimately anywhere else or Google it yourself. This is a disgrace of a veterinarian office.

BEWARE. My family was intentionally misled that our dog would be able to be seen for her emergent respiratory distress, then made to lay in the parking lot unresponsive while staff stood by gawking/sat at the desk. They claimed (after having spoken on the phone with them 3x) to not know who we were and be unable to help. In full transparency, I used harsh language with them while BEGGING for help. That was the only time I got a response. And I would do it again. Apathetic, lazy, and utterly useless. These reviews are all so harsh for a reason. I URGE you to seek care elsewhere. The life of your pet may very well depend on it...mine did. I sincerely pray that these people never are met with the same lack of empathy and basic human respect that they are giving to customers.

Tonight I brought my foster into the clinic because she had an open wound. The vet was wanting to do X-rays, drain tubes, and I explained that I couldn’t authorize what to do without the rescues approval. Dr Marco proceeded to tell me she had other patients. I understand that but no need to be such a rude person so yep I was rude and right now I hate I ever let that so called Dr touch her. I mean 1000 deposit and you cannot wait for me to get it okayed? I have always used them but after this experience I will not return.
