How to Save Money at Guilford-Jamestown Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my 13 year old Great Dane here for an emergency, I was afraid she had a pyometra. An infection in her uterus. They were able to get me in within 30 minutes. All of the staff were so friendly and sweet to my fur baby. They quoted me for the surgery and when I told them I just could not afford that, they were able to refer me to another Vet that could do the surgery for less. I am so thankful for them. Thank you!!

I took my puppy there for the first time as my normal vet couldn't do her vaccines for another few weeks, the staff and doctor I met with were great, explaining everything thoroughly, and also informing me of every option I had for my pet what would be needed in the future , 6 stars

Dr. Barker saw my cat, Ethan, for the first time yesterday after the Cat Clinic turned their backs on him. She was wonderful! Very kind! She listened to my concerns, and referred us to a specialist for his uncontrolled diabetes. Honestly, this was something that should have been done many months ago by his previous clinic. Also Breanna, the supervisor there, is super awesome! Our tech was very informative when providing education. Just a great experience! We are looking forward to seeing the specialist to hopefully understand what is going on with him. Thank you!

Though all the personelle were kind and I am sure did their best, bringing my cat here was a complete waste of $300. Two weeks ago we got a kitten. Two days ago he started limping. The vet here evaluated him and told us to go to Winston for a ER with vet neurologist ASAP. Once at the a ER (in tears for fear that my new kitten was going to die of a neurological infection), the normal ER vet repeated exam. They repeated X-rays after being unable to utilize poor images taken at Guilford-Jamestown, and came to correct (non-neurological) diagnosis of septic knee joint. Antibiotics were prescribed. As a person medical provider, I have enough knowledge to know between poor exam and the grey area of multiple possible diagnosis. In this case, it was the former. With proper exam and X-ray, they first vet could have addressed this problem.

I had a horrible customer service experience on my most recent visit. None of the visits have been stellar the last few years since Dr. McCall and Dr. Kennedy left, but this one was the last straw, and we will not be returning. About 3 weeks ago I had a well visit for yearly check up for my dog. We arrived 10 minutes early for the appointment to check in and proceeded to wait over 30 minutes in the lobby for our scheduled appt. This morning I scheduled a 4:30pm sick visit because my dog hasn’t been feeling well. I had a work call that ran a bit over so I was a little late leaving my home (30 minutes away). I attempted to call the vets’ office twice to let them know of my tardiness, no one answered. I arrived at 4:39p and walked my dog around to try and collect a sample for the vet. There were no bags in the container so we went inside a couple minutes later. I wasn’t greeted by a receptionist, instead I had to say hello and introduce myself. I apologized for being late and let her know I’d tried to call several times. She (skipping a greeting or acknowledgement of mine) proceeded to tell me we’d have to reschedule my appointment to the next day because I was over 10 minutes late for my appointment (setting: very few cars in the lot, no one waiting in the lobby). I firmly but politely said, I would appreciate some grace considering I tried to call with no answer, I had previously waited 20 minutes past my last scheduled appointment time when they were running behind and that I had driven 30 minutes for a sick visit for my unwell pet. She walked to the back and stayed gone several minutes then came back around the corner with another vet tech who echoed that they had spoken to the vet and would need to reschedule. At this point, my politeness was gone, and I firmly let them know how inappropriate this was being handled and that I didn’t appreciate the lack of customer service - the response I received was a shrug and a 3rd echo about rescheduling. Not only will I not be returning but I had already called another vet to have the records transferred before I left the parking lot.
