How to Save Money at Points East Veterinary Emergency Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Vet tech Mickey, is literally the most amazing human being ever. I appreciate her being on top of our pet Simba, and being so helpful to us in so many ways. She was super informative and just overall a great human being. Never doubted her for a second she always gave us the answer we needed and just kept us at ease. The front desk techs were also so polite and informative too. Thank you all for the help!

I took my sweet cat to the animal hospital last night and the staff and providers were so welcoming and supportive. Plus, they have a little coffee bar where you can help yourself. After bringing her home in the early morning hours, she passed away at home a few hours later. I brought her back to the hospital for death confirmation and to request cremation services and the staff was, once again, so accommodating and they gave me a chance to spend some time with her one last time before I gave her to them. I highly recommend bringing your fur babies to this place. I hope your experience is just as positive, even if your furry loved one receives negative news. They’ll take really good care of you and your fur baby while you’re there. Thank you, Points East, for all you did for me and my sweet Abby!

My husband and I were on a road trip and my mini dachshund started to have some severe symptoms that were very concerning. I called the closest emergency vet to us and they were very helpful. They took all of my information over the phone before we arrived to help save time and we’re quick about getting my dog inside. They explained everything that was going on and everyone was very friendly. We had to leave my baby overnight for observation and medications but I knew he was in good hands and he would be taken care of. I called for an update on him overnight and they were happy to take my call and keep me updated. They were also very accommodating to me being as I was from out of town. He is still pretty lethargic but they told us to follow up with our regular vet once we got back home. He’s doing a lot better now and getting back to his normal hyper self. The bill was high but that was expected. They had to run several tests on him to figure out what was going on. I opted for all of the tests and I opted for a minimum of a 12 hour stay. I feel like the bill is typical for an emergency overnight vet visit. This is why I have pet insurance and Care Credit! Came in handy! Hopefully I don’t ever have to return but I know if I do my baby would be taken care of.

This is going to be a very long review, but I believe that the care that was given and the way the staff handled everything deserves all the praise. My mom and I had to make a very difficult decision on a Sunday morning when all other vet services were closed. We called ahead of time and found out that they also offer cremation services, something we were also worried about finding that morning. We called when we arrived and within 5 minutes they were able to bring out a stretcher and help us get our fur baby settled. They brought us to a room that had no medical equipment in it and had a comfortable couch and seating area that felt nothing like a veterinarian hospital. They had a lovely little cookie jar with “Goodbye Kisses” in it (Hershey’s chocolate kisses) that we could give to our fur baby. They allowed us our own private time with him as we said our goodbyes and had a doorbell that we could press when we were ready. They didn’t rush us and let us take our time. We tried giving our fur baby the chocolate, and when he didn’t eat it we knew it was time. The staff was wonderful when it came to the actual procedure and we were allowed to leave when we were ready and we’re not rushed. It took less than a week for our fur baby to be cremated and returned to us. Along with the box we got an impression of his paw print that we are forever grateful for. We are very happy to have our fur baby home with us, where he is supposed to be, and are very thankful for everything that the staff did throughout this whole process. I will highly recommend this clinic to anyone who needs similar services.

Very thankful for this emergency vet. I was pleasantly surprised with how nice and clean the facility was. And everyone that worked there was caring, and professional. They send all their records to your vet, so you don’t have to. They took wonderful care of my baby, and she’s making a full recovery. I would recommend this Emergency Vet to anyone that has a true Pet Emergency.
