How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They are quick to respond to phone calls. What I like about them is that they care about my pet and his needs. They always check him up on to make sure everything with him is good and they give me a good feedback on his health and well being. Been with them for about 5 years and never had any complaints really.

I have a couple things to say. Number 1. I had to have my dog euthanized. The staff there did a nice job of making me feel comforted. However!!! Just four days before I had brought my dog there for a comprehensive exam. I told the doctor that my dog wasn't doing well and he was having a hard time getting up. So, they did the exam...which included stuff that probably wasn't necessary for a dog of his age AND given the fact that I already said he wasn't well. I also had them give him a cytopoint shot and the doc prescribed two weeks of pain pills. Four days later, my dog can't even get up. He urinated on himself that morning, wasnt getting up at all and had thrown up twice the day before. I called the doctor and we made the decision to have him euthanized based on what I had told the doctor. So, then I call Banfield to cancel my policy. Keep in mind that I have been with banfield for 12 years...the entire life of my dog...that was the first mistake. Turns out that even though I had just started the new year on my policy they wanted all the costs for what had been done during the exam OR to pay an entire year of the policy. I asked the Manager at this location if she could help me out a little given the fact that i just spent 400 plus dollars at their establishment which may have caused my dog to take this awful turn. I have paid for his allergy shots, meds, and even the euthanasia out of pocket. I couldn't believe that Banfield would make me pay after his death. It isn't like i got thr exam and then decided to cancel so that i could go to another doctor. My dog died AND I took him to Banfield to help me with that. What a mistake. People! Get insurance elsewhere and go to vets u can trust. I have another instance at the Creedmoor location where the vet put the shot into my dog with such force that he tried to nip her, which is something my Labrador retriever had never done before. Just a heads up people both from the corporate end of Banfield and the location itself. Really hurts. I'm sorry to the lovely nurses that were so super nice to me and my dog that awful day. They even came out with a stretcher to get him. BUT I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT BANFIELD did to me and my dog. Banfield is a money hungry scheme with no policy to read or a way for them to handle situations when there is a death during the contract.

We scheduled for my cat to be seen and looked online at pricing etc. We were mislead in the amount of the cost of that visit, but chalked it up to our online looking and not communicating directly with the office themselves. When we went to the initial appointment they took my cat back and provided services after quoting me the amount to be charged. They didn't have one of the vaccines due to an error (the dog vaccine had been placed int he cat bin). I was told then that the next visit would be at no charge due to having to come three times. The third visit would be charged however. I had my cat in a carrying bag and both children in the car. The office called this morning to confirm my appointment and I asked again about the charge that it was no charge. She said that it was noted so we went to the appointment. I pulled into the curbside pickup the second appointment. I called and they asked me to please come in. I said no, I had my children in the car and needed to do curbside as instructed. They came took my cat did the visit and then called to tell me to come in and pay for the visit. I explained again that there was no charge for the visit because of the mixup last time. She put me on hold and got a manager for the hospital. She again argued with me that I would be charged. Everyone I spoke with was polite but customer service in communicating effectively and providing care with out disclosing the amount before is wrong. I was told if I didn't pay I'd be turned over to collections. I do not recommend this to anyone! Though the staff was friendly, the care provided was not communicated effectively online on the websites or when communicating in person on the phone etc.

The doctor did not give me the corrected diagnosis about my dog. However, the assistant informed me of all that was going on with my baby. She was more helpful than the doctor. Also they didn't answer all of the questions I asked them to check on . Banfield was a little expensive but if you have insurance on your pet it's not so bad.

This was my first visit to Banfield on Skibo Road. I was extremely impressed with the staff as they were very kind and took great care of my dog. Dr. Cizmar is an incredible doctor. She was very detailed in answering all the questions I had and very sincere. I look forward to continue using her as a doctor and Banfield as my vet.
