How to Save Money at Bladen Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I carried a kitten in to be neutered and the staff was professional and efficient. Dr. Parker provided excellent care and a technician went over aftercare needs. I have had many visits there with my dog and cats over the years and have always received compassionate care for my pets and good, practical information.

Amazing customer service. They let me be in the room with my two cats to make them feel more comfortable and we had no issues. I had taken my acts to other veterinarians before them and got told my cats needed to be sedated and had to pay out the rear end for them. BOTH of my cats got their shots up to date and medication for fleas in less than an hour and it cost half as much. Simply extraordinary.

My dog was coughing up blood and we went to two different veterinarian hospitals but they didn't have time to see us, but at Bladen Animal hospital we were able to get in quickly and see the vet. Got answers quickly and a treatment plan. Very relieved and thankful.

The facilities are very clean, and the members are very courteous. They always give information about what is happening to my pet and what is the right treatment and or give options. They will call or send a text message to remind the owners of their pet appointments. Their prices are very affordable, so people can afford and give the care that their pets need.

This was my experience... this was my first visit to this office. I wanted to schedule a neuter for my dog and he was due for a rabies vaccine. First, the vet assistant started lecturing me on all the other vaccines I should be giving him without even asked if he had been vaccinated (he is vaccinated for all that he needs) then the Veterinarian(she never even introduced herself) lectures me on the type of dog food I feed. She then proceeded to take my dog and start belting out commands to him... sit, down, sit, come..... over and over... to which she then decides to start feeding him some kind of treat.... all without asking if he has any food allergies, what commands and hand signals he knows, etc.. She spends about 5 seconds listening to his heart and lungs, if that was even enough time. She does not take his temp, does not look at his eyes or teeth, etc. ( you know a proper exam for a first visit)maybe she did that while she was doing her own obedience training. She does give the rabies vaccine. Then the assistant hands me a paper with the pricing for the neuter, but the vet takes that paper and gives me another, apparently the vet had guessed at his weight. Since he weighted more then she had guessed the amount was obviously more on the new estimate. Now don't get me wrong I don't mind paying for what needs to be done..... my point is that I payed $82 for rabies shot, to schedule a neuter and was purposefully made to feel like I down take good care of my dog!!! I am not going to pay them almost $300 more for that kind of treatment. I worked as a vet assistant for almost 10 years and if they had even bothered to ask I do as much care as I can on my own, that does not mean that my animals are not getting good care. It means that i am very committed to them getting the best care that i can provide. At the hospital I worked at the #1 rule was for provide the best care and #2 was to always treat the owner with respect.... In my experience being humble is always better then being judgemental. Ps my dog was very well behaved doing exactly what she asked even thought she was using the wrong hand signals that he is trained too!
